My daughter will be living and working in Florida for one year beginning in May at Epcot. We are trying to figure the best plan and company to deal with for the duration. She has an I-Phone here but I think that will cost too much to get another there.. given that she can't commit for more than a year so perhaps a Blackberry? Any recommendations? We have another daughter in NYC with Verizon and they are ok...but a little less $$$ would be nice along with reliable service?

Appreciate any suggestions!

Is she part of your family plan right now? If so, you should be able to break her phone off of the family plan and onto its own plan, then when she moves back, reassume the individual plan to your plan. You could probably exchange numbers under the same plan as well.

Well--we can't do that as we live in Canada. We could unlock her I-Phone but that would void the warranty and it's only a few months old and in a year, she does come back to Canada ...

She needs a Phone and Plan..all new:confused3

If your other daughter is already on Verizon, could you start a family network for both of them? You would have to get another phone as I don't think iphones are supported by Verizon.

Have you called your provider? Do they offer any options for extended stays out of the country?

I think family lines have to be in the same area code, I remember going through this with one of my friends, but I'm not sure if it's changed recently.

Ah, didn't notice your location. I think you're kind of stuck.

Our provider has a pkg for $20 a month for USA call home...but she would have her number here so anyone calling her in Florida (and she has many friends) is up for a long distance call plus it doesn't include texting which is 99% of her usage!

I am looking at Verizon to see if we can switch my daughters plan to a family plan to include another cell. We had to pay a deposit as we weren't locking in with daughter number 1 so I am sure we'll be up for the same again.

Thanks for the help!!:thumbsup2

I wonder why Canada doesn't have international calling plans. My Verizon plan works in Canada just like it does in the US, I wonder why the reverse isn't true.

If she is only going to be in the US for a year I would suggest getting a pay as you go phone because the base contracts are usually for 2 years and hefty fees for early cancellation. I do know you can get a 1 year contract with Verizon though.

If you add DD 2 to DD1's plan, all of her Florida friends will still have to call long distance and if they don't have a nationwide calling plan they will get charged for that.

My daughter in NYC with Verizon can't call Canada without it being a long distance charge and the fee is pretty hefty. She can email me from her BB and I reply same way and that is no charge...I think they wanted $40 more a month for her to add Canada as long distance and already her bill is anywhere from $120-$160 per month! Pretty steep...here we have a family plan for 4 cell phones with more minutes than we can ever use and free texting for $200 CAD a month :confused3

I can add the International plan with our provider...either 'Florida call home only' or USA but again, no texting in that and her friends have to call the Canadian number to reach her. If I can't add another cell to the exisiting plan that is in another State, then it's not worth adding her...

She needs a phone that texts..can you do that on Pay as you go?

Thanks again!!!!

We have 5 phones on our Verizon plan, 3 of them have data plans (a blackberry, droid and LG Chocolate touch) with nationwide calling which works in Canada too for $180/month-we have insurance on the Droid and that is another $8/month. Point is, plans vary by state. I don't know if you can have texting with pay as you go plans.

I understand and I am sure DD living in Manhatten we aren't getting a deal

Everything costs more there! :rolleyes1

How much (frequently and for how long) will she be calling Canada, or anywhere? Just last week, HSN had a TracFone pay-as-you-go as their Today's Special. Even now, if they have any left, it's $99.99, comes with 400 minutes, minutes doubled for the life of the phone, and most important, includes international calling to 80 countries including Canada AND you can get a second, local-to-Canada (or Mexico, if appropriate) number on the same phone.

Will she be working in Canada, Karen?

Yes, Dan..she will! Hate those outfits and shudder at the thought of her in one but what can you do!?!? :rolleyes1

She will start on the 'popcorn cart' LOL and progress up the ladder to Le Cellier. She graduated with her degree in Engineering-Chemistry last year, can't find a job which is sad sad sad so she's going back to Disney!!!!!

I'm not too worried about her being able to call Canada on her cell as she can use her land line for that. It's more for her usage in Florida, texting and calling friends and whomever-wherever there?

Thanks for the lead though!!!!!

Anyone heard of Metro PCS and Boost Mobile? She tells me some of her friends are with them?
