Cell phone while on the lazy river

We were at Typhoon Lagoon yesterday. A gentleman behind us was talking on his cell phone while floating down the river. We went back to the resort and there was someone on their phone in the pool.

Would could possibly be that important that you are calling from the lazy river?

I'll start off by saying - I HATE CELL PHONES - now you know where I am coming from.

People don't know how to be alone anymore. They don't understand how to enjoy the moment they are in. They also don't understand how this inability effects people around them.

I was at Sesame Place this weekend and everywhere you turned someone was on a cell phone while standing with their kid. :confused3 Now, I can understand if it were a momentary thing, but I'm talking a constant conversation with someone not there with you to the detriment of the person standing next to you. It's baffling to me.

I would be scared that it would fall in the water too. I would love to send a quick pic to friends that shows I am in WDW though, and even funnier if it came from the lazy river.

While I do think it's completely nutty to just chat away while in the lazy river, it could be that it was his teen children checking in from a park or something. Or, maybe a spouse needed to reach them. While I don't believe that anyone should ever use one while driving (pulling over & parking is almost always an option), as long as they aren't talking and guffawing their way through a movie, show, speach, disney attraction ;) , there are simply times people want/need to connect with someone.

Our DS has had a cell phone since he was 8. He was monitored and had limited service (plus it was only $10/month), but in the event of a problem, he had a way to call for help. Once he and a friend were playing in the friends back yard (heavily wooded). The friend decided to climb a tree and fell and broke his leg. He was crying and yelling and didn't want my DS to leave him. DS was able to call the boys parents who came out to check on him (not thinking the leg was really broken), and didn't bring their phone with them. He then called 911 for them. :)

Plus, he's been able to use the bathroom (depending on the location) on his own and know he could call or be called if he was in there too long for safety. It's not a substitute for parenting and watching your kids, but it does give peace of mind to a point.

Or, this guy could just have a huge sense of self and feel overly important :rotfl2:

It could be he was in touch with other family members but that could be a one minute phone call not most of the lazy river.

The last time I was in Wal Mart and almost everyone was on their cell phones. I took mine out of my pocket and started talking. My daughter just about died and made me put it away. :)

How did we ever grocery shop without cell phones? I can't believe that all those people were dealing with emergencies.

Back to the inner tube at TL, I would have drowned my phone just trying to get into the tube. :)

While talking about the lazy river. I'll complain that at Blizzard Beach on Saturday there was a family of 7 (counted them!) holding hands while on their tubes. This means that they were slowing themselves down because of the total weight and there was no way for anyone else to go around them. And the family did not consist of little children, they were all mostly teenagers.

Now, I understand it is a family park and a family attraction, but please be considerate of the rest of the paying guests who are just floating along at the speed at which the water pushes them. By slowing yourselves down and creating a barrier, you are creating a huge traffic jam behind you and it is spoiling the relaxation and enjoyment for everyone else.

So many times I've overheard adults traveling with their spouses and kids trying to deal with problems back at work. How sad that a vacation can't be a vacation. DH and I were in line at Soarin' and a man behind us got a cell phone call. He said "Well, I'm here with my family at Disney World". Apparently this wasn't a good enough answer for the caller, and this man spent several minutes trying to explain the details of some corporate purchase. When it was time to board Soarin' he finally said "I'm losing the signal, I'll call back later." Fun vacation, huh?

I can't wait until we just have little devices implanted just beneath the skin or even in the ear. Tap your head once to answer and twice to hang up!

This is what I was thinking. And where would one even keep a cell phone while on the lazy river? :confused3

DH has lost 2 (count 'em...2) cell phones in the river! He leaned over the side of the boat, and out they fell...both of them!!! I told him that maybe it was a "sign." :rolleyes1

Unfortunately, for some of us, it's about the only way that we can take vacation these days. :sad2:

My DH can't get out of the office for a week straight if he isn't accessible by both cell phone and blackberrie -- and his company has the international plans, so out-of-the-country isn't an excuse.

That said, I'd KILL him if he brought his cell phone in a lazy river (or to the pool, or in a restaurant on vacation). Even with his work "rules," some things are just unacceptable.

Those Blue Tooth things, thats NOT EVEN a Tooth for Heaven's sake!!! :furious:

The guy I saw held it in his hand when he got off of it. I would have brought a plastic bag or something.

Here's what irked me about cell phone usage on my last trip...

We took my in-laws for their first trip. My wife's family has some huge phone fetish to begin with, even before cell phones, but on vacation the people that weren't on the trip but KNEW my MIL and FIL WERE on the trip would call them any time day or night, "What are you doing now?!?!" And, because we can't under any circumstances let the thing just ring, they'd be chatting it up in line. For the luvva...let the people enjoy their vacation!

Done ranting... :)

The flip side, I can see where having the phone comes in handy...split up in the parks, and a quick call can get you to meet back up again. But, floating down the river, or answering work calls? It's vacation...enjoy it.

I'll preface this by saying "to each his/her own"...

But for me in is just unthinkable to carry on a cell phone conversation at WDW. Maybe to catch up with someone else in your party... but that's about it. The rule for our family is that the cell phone doesn't leave the room at the resort during the vacation. I guess I am just lucky that I don't need to be that accessible to people back home when I am at WDW. I feel sorry for those that do and for their families. To be truly out of touch is a blessing  (but only on vacation).

I agree. It's nice to have for emergencies, but c'mon people! Let's be considerate of those around you. And take a break from it for your kids sake. Cause believe me, they notice!!

In the water- It would have been hard to keep myself from bumping into him to see if he'd drop his phone in the water!! ("Oops! I'm so sorry!") ;)

Has anyone ever confronted someone about their disruptive phone use?
