i just found out i have celiac disease:confused3 and i was wondering if anybody elese has it? we are going to disney world in dec and staying at pop and got the ddp and i dont know if disney world is gluten free! i have been :scared1: freakn out since my dr. told me this today.please help!!!!!!!!!

I have it and there are lots of help on line and in the boards here. Of course not all of WDW is gluten free but they do go out of their way to provide options for people with special dietary needs. Read FAQs on this board for lots of good links.

go to google and search site:www.disboards.com celiac
That will show many of the posts having the word celiac in them, Cache lets you see things as Google saw them.

Celiac means dealing with a manager at the local restaurant who does not after 3 years get what NO WHEAT means. It is an easy disease to live with compared to my other problems. It takes research, networking, and reporting of people to boards and sites so that everyone knows what is safe to eat and not to eat. Take lots of vitamins, stay hydrated, and read labels.

Hi and :welcome: to disABILITIES!

I would suggest you start by looking at the "disABILITIES FAQs", especially Post #3 which has a section (with lots of links) related to special diets. It is one of the top itmems in the forum's list of threads, or you can follow the link in my signature.

There are a lot of threads in this forum related to your subject. The big thing is don't panic, especially since you have over half a year to get used to handling the problem before going to WDW.

Sorry you have the gluten allergy - I know when my son was dx'd with a peanut allergy (and other allergies - ok with gluten though) it was a big learning curve!

My younger son also has type 1 diabetes and celiac is more common in those with type 1 - so I've had the pleasure to meet many kids and adults with celiac. We are also sometimes eating gluten free items because they are given to him because they are peanut free (and the regular ones are "may contains").

I know there are often sections of big grocery stores with gluten free choices of pasta, breads, etc. I see that in a local health food store and the regular grocery. There are also many mail order companies.

I wish I had some good links for you - maybe someone knows a good discussion board for celiac. There is a celiac board at the Children With Diabetes forums at http://forums.childrenwithdiabetes.com/forumdisplay.php?f=5. I'm sure you can get a lot of help from the right online community about the best options for food and dining out.

As for WDW - they will be fantastic - you should not worry. Make sure to note the allergy on all of your TS meal ressies. Contact Brenda Bennet (see the disabilities FAQ on allergies for her email). She will send you a list of places to find gluten free items - or how to get them at CS places with some advance notice.

I know it is overwhelming at first but it will get better - hang in there!:thumbsup2

Don't worry, it may seem tough at first, but it does get better.

My mom's a celiac and WDW is one of the easiest places to travel! She didn't get sick one time while at WDW. The chef's will come to your table and tell you what you can eat and what you can't eat. Many places even baked her GF dinner rolls! She was so excited!!!!

Don't panic...you're trip will be magical - plus they sell GF brownies at the Bakery at MK. They are good...my mom usually stocks up before we go home.

:)

I am going through this myself and I could also need to eat a dairy free diet. I am thinking about the next disney trip and what I will be able to eat. I did just come accross a favorite salad dressing recipe that I have made several times and would like to share it.

Honey mustard dressing

3 TBS honey
2 TBS dijon mustard
1/4 cup apple cider vinegar
1/2 cup canola oil

Mix together and serve with salad, store in a shaker jar in fridge.

I found this in a past issue of taste of home and it is a family favorite and safe for my diet.

Wow It would be nice to have that organized and linked in the FAQs. A lot of food to choose from. I liked the links to the companies but Divvies did not seem to have a link to their gluten free foods, sigh, I miss jelly beans so much.

Thank you for the list.

I can make a link to this thread, but one of the problems is that WDW does change products or items from time to time. An item that was 'safe' one trip may not be 'safe' the next time. I know some people have posted that they were told to contact WDW and get a new list on each trip.
I would hate for someone to look at this list and think they were eating a safe food and find out it had been changed in a way that made it unsafe for them

TinkerJess:
I have a Wheat/Gluten allergy myself, not celiac but I know we are bound by the same rules.I had a chili bowl {in the bread} at Disneyland this past week and only ate a pigeon's mouthfull of the bread and got dizzy..but later on the chili affected me..it's so hard not to eat that stuff when your on a time schedule at the parks! Good Luck to you;)

The chili could have picked up gluten in the kitchen. I told my friends no pizza parlours for our meeting next month. For me it is easy to stay gluten free except for people who accidently drop croutons in my salad or use a ladle for chili that touches the bread.

Our DD age 17 is gluten intolerant and we took our first trip since her diagnosis in October. It was perfect. We stayed at SSR and on our first day she went down to the Artist Palette to scope out what they had that she could eat. (she did this during a slow time of day). One of the cooks came out and when they found out what she was doing, guided her, and it turns out they even were able to provide gluten free flatbread pizzas. On the rest of the trip when they saw her coming they remembered! In fact one day the chef gave her a free "rice krispy" type treat that they had just gotten in. He asked her to try it and give him her opinion. We found the same thing at All star music where we stayed our first night...the next morning for breakfast they made her gluten free Mickey waffles. All the counter services and sit downs were equally accomodating. All had GF menus and the chefs came to talk to her. You should be just fine! Just be sure to let each place know.

I agree with Sue that anyone going with a food allergy or dietary concern should call Disney about 1-2 weeks before their trip to ask them to send the most current list.

My younger son has a peanut allergy and we have seen items be added, taken away and changed in the past four years we've dealt with it at WDW.

While the list is helpful to see and it is good to point out what was safe on a previous visit but I think it is absolutely necessary to get the most current list.:thumbsup2

I'm loving all these options! Kayla's autistic so we are doing the gluten free/dairy free thing. Since it's not an allergy we're not strict about it, but it's more of a preference.

Can you get gluten free waffles at all the places that serve breakfast or only certain ones? We are staying at Pop. Kayla only eats waffles for breakfast -- won't eat eggs or breakfast meats, etc. Otherwise she is going to be living on gluten free brownies, LOL.

You're going to have a wonderful Gluten Free WDW visit! Disney accomodates allergies well, They'll make your dining experience so magical, you'll be depressed when you get home!

Good luck with managing your disease. It is getting somewhat easier eating out in the "real" world these days as people become more allergan aware.

More chain restauarants are offering gluten free choices. (Outback, PFChangs, Chili's....)

Just a little Disney Plug...but Disney Cruiseline is AWESOME for too!:goodvibes
