Celebrating "anniversaries"

This will probably cause a stir but it came from something I read on another board. Do you think it is okay or appropriate to celebrate an "anniversary"and expect recognition for it if you are not legally married?

If it is a legitimate anniversary (5 years together, etc) then I think it's fine---if it is just any other day and you are just saying it's your anniversary---now that is just plain lying.

yes i think it is fine. gay couples for instance who can't get married in many parts of the country they should be able to celebrate their aniversaries and i would celebrate with my gay friends as well. no big deal. same with people who just decided to never get married.

Sorry it wasn't clear- example being you go on a cruise and maybe there is a special gift or recognition for those having anniversaries, or expecting recognition from friends or family... does that help?

your example doesn't make my opinion any clearer. If I spend a boat load of money to go on a cruise for example for my anniversary and celebrate it even though it already passed or is coming up I feel I should be able to. Its like birthdays in Disney you maybe celebrating a birthday whether or not it is happening on the trip or not.

I think celebrating it on a personal level is fine. Expecting others to recognize it isn't fair - unless it has been made clear all along to close family and friends that a particular date is an anniversary.

A wedding is a particular moment in time that someone can mark on their calendar and say, this is when the lifelong committment / marriage began.

For people who choose not to or are unable to get married, I think it is perfectly acceptable for them to celebrate some sort of anniversayr (ie date of lifelong committment), as long as they hold it out from the beginning as the date.

Does any of that make sense?
