Ceiling fans being removed from the Poly!!!

I wonder if the sensor wont let the room go below 68(?) degrees - or whatever its set for, and I went down to the front desk to complain that we're hot, will they send someone up to disconnect the sensor so we can make the room cooler? Or just give us a box fan? Or tell us to deal? I dont remember the last time I slept without a ceiling fan on when it was above 60 degrees. I just really like the flow of air it provides.

I experienced this last year when we stayed at the Poly. I called the front desk and maintenance was able to drop the temperature to 65 for us. But, the sensor still kept shutting off the AC when we weren't in the room. At least the fan would provide some motion but it seems that will no longer be an option. I have also heard suggestions of keeping a balloon in your room to keep the AC motion sensors activated and another thread had a suggestion for overriding the sensor. https://www.disboards.com/threads/motion-sensor-thermostats.3608157/

We just stayed at the BW Villas and had ceiling fans in the living room and bedroom and these units were just remodeled a few years ago. I enjoyed the fan for the white noise and was able to adjust the AC there with no issues or motion sensor.

My experience is that the balloon trick doesn't work because the sensors are now motion sensors and infrared sensors. Meaning they have to sense movement and heat (of a human body) to keep the temp from reverting to the higher setback temp.

That hack with pressing Display and Up doesn't work either. I think most hotels have programmed over that now that it's all over the internet.

The only place that has ever truly helped me when I complained about the sensor was over Spring Break at a non-Disney resort where the maintenance guy took the plate off the thermostat and actually disconnected the sensor wire, like unplugged it. However, most hotels have a lock on the thermostat box now where you can't do that either

I keep waiting for some sort of consumer uprising where people get fed up with these things but it doesn't seem to be happening. The best thing I have found is to set the temp higher at the start of the night and just get used to sleeping in a warmer room. Because once you fall asleep and the sensor doesn't sense you anymore, it will be worse to get hot, than to start out hot if that makes sense. I also travel with a Vornado fan now.

Bummer, I was hoping to use either or both of these ideas in the fall. I guess I will ask for a box fan since I pack way too much to include a fan in my suitcase!

The Vornado is small and light if there is a way to pack it (I know what you mean though about suitcase size)
If you shoot it right at yourself it can help
I haven't had luck ever getting a box fan, they are always out of them

Can the temp really go no lower than 68? is it just me or does that seem unreasonably high especially in the high heat/humidity of September?

Regarding the motion sensor thermostat, BWV was the only hotel in my experience that has the old style thermostats. But what was nice about having a cold room was negated by having a moldy bathroom with corroding rusted fixtures. I keep my house at 65 in the summer and 60 in the winter being from the northeast. I also try and avoid summer months so I don't have to come back to a room that takes 20-30 minutes to come back down to 70

There is a solution, just leave one of these on in the room:

Punish them doubly for the energy they're trying to save in the name of cost cutting. Wacky waving inflatable arm flailing tube man has to run all day and so does the AC because the motion sensor wont shut off anymore.8-)

I'll see myself out....

I seriously doubt you can ever get a room lower than 68 the way they are programmed. Even if you did, once you fell asleep, if the sensor stops sensing your presence, it's probably going back to a much high setback (I think the setbacks are at least 72 if not higher)

That won't work with a lot of sensors unless you have a way to heat that blue guy up to 98.6 ;)

I'll put the hair dryer on inside him too :D

I should only need to get him up to mid seventies which he should get to in the room, skin is generally around the same temperature of where the person is, if you have one of those laser IR thermometers that you can point at something to tell the temperature try pointing it at your skin, it should be marginally close to the temperature of the room you're in.

Someone should figure out what types of thermostats they are and figure out how to enter the service mode or settings to shut off the motion sensor check off.

LOL

It's very easy to disconnect the sensor if they didn't have them locked. Maintenance should have the key to unlock them I would think.

We had luck with the new sensor thermostats by switching the unit to ON and NOT AUTO. It held the temperature all night. It actually got too cold at one point. Try that. It works.

They can take away levels and add towels and coffee makers, but still doesn't make a value any closer to a deluxe, and, giving the values a coffee maker, fridge and pool towels just brings them up to what any motel 6 would have.

Seriously! Almost any national chain had these basic offerings.

I guess I'm just getting annoyed with Disney taking away amenities like fans, bed runners, but still gouging you with continually higher prices.
I just saw an add for a new Universal Value resort, Aventura. 3 pools, hot tub, water slide, 314 sq ft rooms with floor to ceiling windows and inside halls for $114. Why does Universal manage to keep prices reasonable and Disney feel the need to gouge us?

We travel a lot. I have stayed in resorts all over the US, Caribbean and Mexico. I mention this to frame my perspective as a non-Disney traveler. Our first park trip was to Disney, stayed at the Poly. Our second park trip was to Universal, stayed at Portofino Bay. Both rooms were club level. My thoughts on the bolded question above -

Disney resorts at not designed or managed to generate non-room revenue the way normal resorts operate. Disney's focus on quick service (thin profit margins) food options and ADRs that limit sit-down dining options mean they need to have higher room rates to make the overall numbers work.

At Loews and any other real resort or full service hotel has food and beverage options that are huge profit centers, typically at least one real sit-down restaurant as well as a pool bar/grill. And management makes it very easy to spend money at such places with chair-side attendants happy to serve you a food and drink at the pool, dining reservations requests always granted or at least helpful staff willing to make alternative arrangements and recommendations.

I don't mean to judge one over the other, they are two completely different business models and need to be priced as such.

UGH this is horrible! Even low budget hotels have ceiling fans. Also ceiling fans are not out of style, UGLY ceiling fans (think shiny brass) are out. Plus they perform a needed function. Maybe we should also get rid of A/C because it's ugly? So frustrating that they're doing this. If you don't like a ceiling fan just don't turn it on. You don't have to have it on just because it's there. That's like me thinking that they should remove coffee makers because I personally don't drink coffee.

Ughhh I hope we find a way to over ride it, or if I take the iron and just smash it to pieces, maybe that'll work too. LOL.

LOL

I would call maintenance or the front desk and tell them you need the sensor disabled. Period. If someone comes and opens up the box and pulls out the plug, it's been disabled. Anything less than that and my money is on the fact that is hasn't been disabled.

Or just smash it and you can pull out the plug yourself! Kidding!!

I have a feeling we'll be doing just this - first the proper way, secondly the not so much and I'll be billed for an accidentally broken thermostat. LOL.
