Wish me luck, I am going to try to verbalize the "thumb" approach to the answer to your question.
Take your right hand and give the 'thumb's up' sign.
Curl your fingers so they sort of all point towards yourself.
Rotate your hand slightly
The direction your fingers are going is counter-clockwise.
Your thumb is pointing up-which is where the air direction is desired in the wintertime.
Ready for summer?
Do a 'thumb's down'
Curl your fingers so they point towards yourself
Rotate your hand slightly
The direction your fingers are going is clockwise
Your thumb is pointing down-which is the direction you want the fan to go in the summertime.
Every season (this morning in fact) I do this exercise. I know in the winter I want the air to go up, so I figure out what direction I want the fan to be going. I always check even though I am the one who adjusts the fan because it is fun! Hope that helped, but I probably made it sound too complicated.
