ceiling fan: clockwise or counterclockwise..

It should chop instead of sweep, which I believe is clockwise.

ETA: Most fans have a switch that say forward and reverse. You should set it on the reverse setting.

Looking up at ours, still going "cool", it's running clockwise. We'll have to get up there and switch it counter for the coldest months. Guess I'll get around to dusting it then, too. ;)

In the winter time, if you stand underneath the fan, you should NOT feel air hitting you, if you do switch directions of the blades.

Hey Hogfan, check there out! We have several.

Wish me luck, I am going to try to verbalize the "thumb" approach to the answer to your question.

Take your right hand and give the 'thumb's up' sign.
Curl your fingers so they sort of all point towards yourself.
Rotate your hand slightly
The direction your fingers are going is counter-clockwise.
Your thumb is pointing up-which is where the air direction is desired in the wintertime.

Ready for summer?

Do a 'thumb's down'
Curl your fingers so they point towards yourself
Rotate your hand slightly
The direction your fingers are going is clockwise
Your thumb is pointing down-which is the direction you want the fan to go in the summertime.

Every season (this morning in fact) I do this exercise. I know in the winter I want the air to go up, so I figure out what direction I want the fan to be going. I always check even though I am the one who adjusts the fan because it is fun! Hope that helped, but I probably made it sound too complicated.:scared1:

in the winter? I can never remember.

I think you are asking the wrong question. It does not matter which ay it spins. WHat happens if your fan fins are tilted different than everyon elses?

You want to know which way the air is moving.

the fin is tilted. Sort of like a ramp. the air zips along and jumps the ramp. Except the air doesn't move the ramp does.

So watch which way it is spinning and see which way the air is jumping.

Or do it the old timer way. wet your finger, hold it out level. The cold side has the air blowing on it.

That is waaaay too easy! You have to have a physics class in your living room, torque and all!!:rotfl2:

We use a feather to tell. I take a little down feather (we do have a bird) and if it blows away, I leave it there for summer. If it sucks up towards the blades, that's what I want for winter. :thumbsup2

in the winter? I can never remember.

My DH argues with me all the time on this. I simply google it & show him 3 sources & prove my point. :goodvibes

In the summer you want to feel the breeeze on your skin. In the winter, you don't.

I don't switch our bedroom fan -- gotta keep the summer breezes to combat those "pesky" hot flashes!
