The FDA will review J&J’s application on February 26th. No rush FDA. It’s not there is a raging pandemic or anything.

Welp the UK variant has made its way to my state. They are investigating, or trying to at least, to figure out how they got it and who else was exposed.

Now here's the thing that is good and what I wish would be occurring all over: The person is a student who is also an athlete at a University which is located nearly 4 hours away from me. They have weekly testing at that University for athletes and that's how they found out that the student was 1) positive and 2) because they were aware of the UK variant the state has ben making a concerted effort to do more genetic testing

Now as a result the state is sending a mobile lab to that University to be able to perform more tests and quicker.

I'm sure they are, the state already said they were going with the assumption it was here. But for the purposes of tracking, containing and understanding the spread and the migration this becomes incredibly important to have confirmation. It's how we knew of the TX variant that made its way through the Midwest, concentrating heavily on the Upper Midwest and went around the country. Without genetic testing we lack comprehension of the virus and where it pops up.

I don't think we need to jump on them for doing that There are a lot of variants out there but I do believe the UK one has been of concern, the South African one, wasn't there a Brazil one? has been of concern and a few others. I don't think people are going to be talking about the 4,000 or so variants.

to clarify, I didn’t mean to jump on anyone or say so what, I was musing and didn’t express that well. I didn’t mean that the variants are everywhere; therefore we shouldn’t sequence and track. I meant that it’s likely not the first case anywhere, and the big surges we’ve been seeing has likely been at least somewhat related to that.

I’ve had to stop looking at the news this week because everything is so doom and gloom, variants are here and the end is near, level of reporting.

We absolutely should sequence and trace. But, we should’ve been doing that all along, and I just wonder what we would’ve seen if we had been.

You may be unaware but some have recently taken vacations for similar posts. They were tipped off as to why.

I've seen interesting threads with good information suddenly removed because of repeat infractions. It's frustrating. IMO This has been going a while and is informative. I'm hoping it has staying power.

I am interesting reading more about the J&J vaccine because it’s the one I’ll likely end up getting. I hope they publish their study like pfizer and Moderna did. I’d like to know how they define serious and moderate illness. Also, how long after the shot does it need to take effect?

Yup, it's everywhere now. It's good that particular university is testing for it. There's a thread on twitter this morning by an epidemiologist on the U.K variant. I'll post the link below....it's a long thread and he gets in the weeds a bit, but I think you're a data driven individual....so you might enjoy the depth. He's re-iterating what the Danes have been shouting about for a few weeks now....that B-117 is going to take off in coming weeks. In Denmark they sequence *every* positive test, so they have a good handle on this. If we're flying blind here in the U.S., they're the exact opposite of us. The epidemiologist addresses the dropping cases in South Africa and the U.K. and attributes the dramatic fall to the dramatic lockdowns that are currently in place there. He does point to Israel and the success they've had with the vaccine roll-out as a way out. Until then, he seems to think very high quality masks (kn-95's, n-95s) are a way to beat this back.

Still....I'm hoping that as vaccinations hopefully pick up steam here that we can certainly avoid another full blown surge. Will we see another mini to medium surge in a month or so...perhaps. I still think the worst is behind us.

im definitely interested in the J&J vaccine data too. It may end up being the vaccine that most of us get.
