CDC Notifies States, Large Cities To Prepare For Vaccine Distribution As Soon As Late October

Yet another emergency distribution as a freezer broke down and several hospitals in Seattle rushed to get as many vaccinated as they could on short notice before the expiration at 5:30 AM.

Sauer said she conferred with the health department Thursday night, which outlined three priorities: That hospitals try to get eligible people through first; that those soon to be eligible, such as teachers and grocery workers, go next; and that no dose go to waste. Sauer said no dose went unused and 1,600 total doses were administered across locations.
Swedish Medical Center helped to distribute vaccine. The health system received a call at 9 p.m. and posted notice on its social media pages, prompting more than 100 people to line up at Swedish’s clinic in Campion Hall at Seattle University. Swedish tweeted at 10:59 p.m. that it had 588 doses to give out. By 12:30 a.m., all the appointment times had been taken.
At the Swedish clinic, vaccines were still being administered past 3 a.m. Friday.
Swedish reached out Thursday evening to clinical and nonclinical volunteers who had been consistent workers at the clinics, then filled in gaps with partners and spouses. Word also spread on social media among health-care workers and volunteers that the clinic had an urgent need for help.

In a way as long as they got all the doses used this is a crazy ironic good thing, since its forcing them to get more vaccinated quicker. But very stressful situation also.

So I thought I'd ask this group for some opinions.

I managed to get my first dose of the Pfizer vaccine on Friday (just a very sore arm for about 36 hours or so). However, unless the state's website significantly improves soon and I manage to get a 2nd appointment, I could be SOL.

Work just announced they would be doing vaccines starting this Thursday for the next 5 Thursdays, and it should easy enough to grab one... but they're going to have Moderna.

Would you skip the second dose completely, or would you mix manufacturers? I'd be interested in hearing your thoughts.

For background:

47 yo Female, no health conditions. I have a 14yo and a 16yo and sometimes a 15yo who are all in school in person as well as activities, and I do have to go to work. My husband is WFH for the time being.

I'd recommend signing up for both appointments- get the work appointment and attempt to get your follow up with the state. If you can, get the second Pfizer dose. But if not, getting the Moderna is WAY better than getting nothing. In fact, some of the research suggests that one of each might be slightly more effective.

I don't know what state you are in but in NY the second doses are guaranteed. We were required to signup for our second dose while waiting the 15 minutes after getting the first one. I would contact where you received the first one and find out how to make your appointment for the second one.

Here's some discussion on the issue you're facing....

One more note from the NY Times:

Of the "Big Five" vaccines being tested in the US (Pfizer, Moderna, JNJ, AZ, and Novavax), around 75,000 people received "real" vaccine shots. To date, there have been ZERO deaths from Covid combined.

Looking at a random cross section of Americans, you would see roughly 150 deaths from Covid amongst 75,000 people.

EDIT: I mention this in part due to the fear in variants. Assuming the variants have been here for a while and people in the vaccine studies have been exposed to them, the evidence seems to suggest the vaccines are effective against them.

So, in our county, once you have received one shot, you are automatically scheduled for your second. However, in some cases, people miss their second appointment or something else happens and they can't get scheduled, but if they show up 3 weeks later at the place they got the first one , they are prioritized ahead of people there for their first shots. Maybe just try going back in 3 weeks with your card.

I would not mix and match vaccines. It's not recommended and the timeline for the 2 different vaccines between doses is different.

Don't skip the second dose, but also know that you can go an additional 2 weeks before getting your second Pfizer shot.

I wouldn't mix and match either. The C.D.C says that one can do so in "extraordinary situations". But there is no data on this yet. It has not been studied. But at least early on, I can see this being an issue for some people. I'm thinking the J&J vaccine is going to make things easier on people.

And that's been in like the last week and a half really that they updated that. When these vaccines were approved under EUA it was that you don't mix, they are not interchangeable and it has not been studied to be mixed. I'm guessing the update is largely in related to pressure from lack of supply not because they actually want people to start doing that as a norm.

I could be wrong ultimately, but the US is tracking today for its lowest new case number (holidays included) in almost 3 months.

I so want to remain hopeful, but I keep seeing the reports on how we are in for the “worst yet” as the UK and South African strains start making the rounds in the US.They are saying we are six weeks behind the UK and could expect to see these huge numbers of cases, deaths, and overwhelmed health care systems. However, I’m sure the UK didn’t have as many people vaccinated when their surge started as we should have now, so maybe that will help? I’m really feeling the strain of knowing our family is so many months out before we can get the vaccine

I am willing to bet that the UK strain showed up here around the same time as it was discovered there. They were doing much more surveillance than we were, by a LOT. Our case numbers also started to dramatically increase only a few weeks after the spike in UK cases. I think we already had our surge.

I think so too.

I also think the vaccinations are causing the downward trend. Like the pp stated, it is so hard to wait your turn for the vaccine. We are months away from receiving it and my anxiety grows when I start to think of how far off we are. I know it's a huge undertaking to vaccinate everyone, but I wish it would speed up. I would love to be able to enjoy this summer.

Someone said on another thread that JnJ stated today that they won't have the amount of vaccine that they said they would? I can't find it in the news, is it true?
