CDC Notifies States, Large Cities To Prepare For Vaccine Distribution As Soon As Late October

I suspect the main reason they weren't is because so many were closed down or running in such a reduced form that they simply didn't register in the minds of many leaders. Some schools in my state opened in the fall but I don't think any went back after the holidays, and there's no rush to vaccinate kids who are supposed to be sitting home (or in their reduced-capacity dorms) and taking all of their courses online.

That’s undoubtedly true in some areas. But in this part of the country lots of schools still have lots of students in dorms.

I saw an absolutely fascinating point yesterday on the topic of why deaths are not falling faster. Well, here’s why:

California yesterday reported 179 deaths. Only 14 of them were from anytime in the entire MONTH OF MARCH. The other 93% were from as far back as December.

This has always been the case with death reporting, though, at least in California. Last fall we had deaths from June and July being reported in November. It doesn't really explain much considering those delays have always been present.

So my county has been averaging about 1500 tests a day and about 20 positives. Yesterday they did 2500 tests and had 2 positives. Now I know a one off isn’t something to read into, but it’s so nice to not see us up in the 100+ cases a day anymore!

That's awesome! We had 90 yesterday, but out of 17,838 tests. That's a positivity percentage of like 0.05%. It's nice to see these percentages below 1%, finally! So encouraging!

It'll get better as time goes on and more are vaccinated, too. I think most people are mentally exhausted from the whole pandemic ordeal, regardless of where they are on the spectrum ranging from outright denial to total paranoia. The latest headline I saw that said something like "CDC director warns of impending doom" made me chuckle a little. I get that there will probably be another "surge" in certain areas, probably among younger folks, but any sort of warning by now falls on mostly deaf ears.

It'll be interesting to see how many are ultimately willing to take the vaccine and how many will really avoid it. I'd say about 75% of people I talked to in any way about it over the past 6 months responded with either "absolutely not" or "not until much later", yet the majority of them got the first shot before I did  so I'm at the stage where I'm disregarding anything further I hear or read on the topic until final results come in. (I've already implemented this policy for sports and political "analysts".) It's such a new situation that people's minds change pretty regularly. I'm of the opinion that once the vaccines are readily available and everyone has had a chance to get the necessary shot(s), we should open everything completely back up to 100% with masks optional. Those who refuse it or can't take it for whatever reason assume the risk at their own peril. And if a business or service requires it but you opted out, then you're out of luck on that, too.

It's great to see things coming back to normal again. My (developmentally disabled) step-kid's summer camp is actually ON this summer (albeit with less campers and masks, but the fact that it's happening is a real miracle!!) My hope is that we'll be on the other end of this completely -- as much as possible -- by this fall. I think that's where we're headed. 🤞🤞

I'm so burnt out from being at home. I'm looking for the end to be here in the fall too. I do hope kids 12+ are able to start getting it this year as that would make it more likely we get to herd immunity. I'll be fully vaccinated by May.

I've been to WDW 4 times since they reopened (5 next week ;) ). That's way more than a normal year, but everything in IL was shut down so it was nice to have somewhere safe to go, get out of the house, and experience SOME sense of normalcy.

I should take a quick moment to extend a special "thank you" to the friends and family who were too scared of covid to accept my offer to use some of our DVC points. I assure you all that they were put to good use! :teeth:

Don't have time for the updates I was providing weekly, but deaths really are trending down big time. Down 10%+ on rolling 7 day avg, down to October numbers and falling. Cases unfortunately up over last few weeks, but it does appear they have hit the peak of this very tiny wave and may be heading back down. Vax hit over 3M a day weekly avg for first time ever today.

I am optimistic that within two weeks we will start to see a nice downward trend. The next few days may be funky with the holdiay.

I count this as good news of how our area feels they are doing. In a month the main library system in my county (that has a lot of branches) is re-adding things back into services:

  • Regular hours resume at all remaining locations (two locations are regular hours as of April 19th, April 23rd Friday hours will be re-added (presently they are all closed on Fridays)
  • Meeting, conference and study rooms open (bookable beginning April 28)
  • Newspapers and magazines return
  • Laptop lending at one of the libraries
  • Soft seating, chairs and tables available
Masks are still required inside until at least April 30th (depends on how the county's mask mandate goes)

Only reason I share this is the libraries are near and dear to my heart and I love seeing them getting back to their fullest :)

I get my first shot on Wednesday (everything open for 16 and up). Both kids are in college and were on a waiting list. They got called today and they will both be getting the J&J shot this week. DH had his J&J shot last week. So we will all be vaccinated soon. Yeah!!

Should we be concerned with the variants at this point? The vaccines seem to protect against b117, but what about this double mutant India variant?

Cases in my county are now at 206 per 100K, so at least we've stopped doubling weekly. It took two whole weeks this time. Headlines right now are about several hundred "breakthrough" cases in fully vaccinated people in my state, including a handful of deaths, and two people in my social circle lost middle-aged loved ones to the virus this past weekend. Which, taken all together, is making it pretty hard to stay positive that there is in fact a light at the end of this tunnel.

I'm jealous! Our library has either been closed completely or curbside only for all but 7 weeks since mid-March of last year, and they just closed down again indefinitely because of the trends in our area. They are so slow to reopen when things improve that they missed the whole lull both in summer and early this year, reopening just as the trend started heading up again; in the fall they managed 3 weeks open, this time they made it 4. Even when they were open, there were no periodicals, no computers, no seating and no study spaces, but it was nice just being able to go in and browse. I miss being able to see what catches my eye, rather than having to reserve specific titles online.

Those breakthrough cases and deaths are very unfortunate even if it has been a known fact that these vaccines are not 100% effective and breakthrough cases were going to happen.
Wonder how many of those affected thought they were completely immune because they were vaccinated. (Don’t mean it in any negative way. Just wondering how their habits may have changed after the vaccine).
