Maybe I have a misperception of Kroger, but I thought it was a bricks and mortar grocery store? I don't know how they used a my card there since it never left my wallet!

Crooks can get card numbers without EVER seeing the card. Then they make the actual card, if they wish to, and use them. Or better, sell the information to someone else who then takes the risk of using it.


My brother had a string of internet-only cards whose numbers were being stolen; one set was stolen before he'd even opened the mail with the cards in it. Chase, of course.

This happened to DS19 (20 tomorrow!) just today. He got a text from Chase alerting him to a possible fraudulent use on his debit card (he doesn't have a credit card). Since he didn't recognize the number, he figured it was probably a scam of some sort, but decided --wisely -- to check his account. He had a $2 charge on the account, and a couple of bigger money declined items. He doesn't keep much in this account -- moves most of it to his savings account, so he didn't have the money the thieves were trying to spend. He asked DH right away (DH is an accountant), and called Chase. He'll be inconvenienced for a few days while they send him a new card, but better than losing money from his account!

Wow, go figure! What I don't know about being a criminal would fill a bucket!

My brother got a call while he was in Disney World. His corporate card had been compromised to the tune of $32,000!

He has no personal cards and had used the card when he checked into the Embassy Suites at MCO but made no charges to the room. He paid for the room with "frequent stay" points. Fortunately, he is on vacation and is not in desperate need of a credit card for business travel. A new card will be waiting for him when he gets home.

There seems to be a large amount of credit card skimming that goes on in Orlando due to the vast number of tourists who are not watching their accounts as closely when they are on vacation. And if you alerted your credit card company that you would be traveling to the area, they would not flag the account for "unusual spending" in the Orlando area.
