CBS Apologizes

What's the big deal? It's a breast! Some of you are acting like it's shaking the very foundation of our country. Give me a break.

Bare breasts have no place on national television at prime time.

I actually think it IS a big deal.

It's not just the breast reveal. I felt the whole production was too edgy and was inappropriate for a super bowl half time show.

The more people sit back and take an 'it's no big deal' attitude, the more accepted it becomes.

Those of us who were offended have the right to make our voices heard. I will be sending a complaint to CBS as well.

I'm sure to some it was a beautiful sight. And actually, I was not so much offended by the breast, (after all, I have a set of my own I see each and every day!) as I was being played to on that level. And as far as it shaking the foundation of our country, that is a work in progress, and the media are the ones at the helm of this sinking ship. That type of show, and I mean the entire half -time show, should have had a parental warning on it! It was "potty entertainment", and people have a right to complain if they want to. Let me explain that I think Jimmy Kimmel is hysterical. I think, his humor is adolescent, but funny, so I am not one of those who think that there is no place for this. But at that hour, with that many viewers, potentially being of impressionadle age, it was not the time. Again, if they had given warning, that would have been one thing, but it was all for shock and ratings, and a rediculous attempt by struggling pop icons to revive their careers. Yeah, I know they are still at the top of their game to some, but clearly they think they need to resort to this to get attention. Too bad. I had a gentleman arrested down the street from my home as a child for indecent exposure. How is this any different? I think The entire media industry needs an enema!

No one is saying that it should be illegal to have breasts and people dancing like those people were dancing on TV. But you expect certain things during a certain type of program. When I watch football, I accept that there will be a certain level of violence. Not bloody shooting incidents, but people knocking each other over. That's the point of football. I also accept that some players and coaches will get mad at the refs, so I may hear or see some bad words mouthed. (I do expect those people to be fined by the NFL when it happens.) But entertainment with questionable lyrics, dancing that simulates sex, and bare breasts is not part of the package. You can watch that stuff all you want, but the network needs to let me know that that's what happening so I can choose not to watch.

I agree that CBS showed poor judgment letting MTV develop the half time show. I wondered if the average Super Bowl viewer would be interested in any of the performers.

However, I don't agree that the media is to blame for indecency on television shaking the foundation of our country or however it was phrased. People WATCHING the indecent stuff is to blame IMO. TV networks simply put what they believe sells on the air.

I'd be willing to bet that the apologies we're hearing from CBS, MTV and Justin Timberlake were all written long before the halftime show even aired. They were probably written at the time these guys decided to pull this stunt. They knew it would generate a flood of complaints, but they've taken the "Let's do it anyway and just apologize afterwards" route.

Bet, you could very well be right about the possibility of prewritten apologies. That is certainly what it appears to be in the case of the MTV President.

Here is what Bill O'Reilly said, in part: "Finally enough is enough with this rap hip-hop culture deal. The National Football League got what it deserved. Crudeness is at the epicenter of the MTV culture. I hope these fools are proud of themselves. And I hope clear thinking Americans finally get the message. "

What we need to do is to create a huge backlash that gets to the NFL, Viacom, CBS, and MTV.

Without starting a debate, I do agree with your statement of the media doing whatever sells. However, the issue is still ratings and $$. And those things are what the Media corps are after. It used to be that there were places and times for such displays, but since those places (as a result of the proliferation of Cable TV, which is a whole other media issue) are gobbling up the lions share of ratings, the networks are being forced to compete on that level. The FCC is supposed to keep a lid on these things so there is some choice in programming and to keep the television airways in a manner reflective of our social values and norms. Now, one can argue that the half-time display is exactly that, but it seems as though there are at least a few out there who disagree.

Amen, brother! Nobody ever breast fed in public? A breast is a breast.

While I think it was an inappropriate forum, I believe that all involved parties are not to be "blackballed."

And while writing to CBS may be all well and good, I really think that nothing is going to happen. Are people really going to boycott CBS? CSI is the top rated show in the country. I'm pretty sure it will continue to be. And now that Survivor All Star is back, I'm sure CBS will be doing just fine in the ratings department.

As far as MTV is concerned, don't watch it if you don't want to. It's as simple as that.

Well, CBS, Justin & Janet got what they wanted - we're all talking about it. Some seem to be "appalled" but I'm sure don't turn the TV off when commercials are on w/women practically showing their breasts and probably buy some of the product. Some probably watch TV shows showing the same thing, etc.

It was a stupid stunt involving a body part to get ratings and sell CD's - but look how so many are "up in arms" over it. My son and I laughed at it as stupid, nothing more, then went about our business.

As far as Kid Rock wearing the flag - I have no problem with that. Throwing it to someone behind him - it didn't touch the ground - what's the big deal? He may have some raunchy songs & done some stupid stuff (who hasn't?), but he's gone overseas to entertain troops countless times and from what I've read is not too bad of a person.

Everybody just needs to ease up and not be so uptight. We only get one go round here. If some had a dread disease, I'll bet the last thing on their minds would be Janet Jackson's right boob.

:wave2:

LOL! I truly thought it was the best 1/2time show I've
ever seen during the Superbowl!
I thought the energy level and performances
were stellar. It never entered my mind that the Janet/Justin
"thing" was an accident. My 8yo DS watched the whole thing
and had no idea what had just happened. I love MTV and
E! also HBO. I live in a very happy household, have a successful marriage and love to be entertained. Don't like what's on TV?
turn it off. Hate MTV, don't watch it. It's not about you if you
don't get sucked in.
Peace out

Point one:"It was a stupid stunt involving a body part to get ratings and sell CD's - but look how so many are "up in arms" over it. "
--I am glad to see that many people ARE up in arms over it. This stuff will be fostered on prime time television unless there is a protest. I am happy to see the protest.

Point two:"As far as Kid Rock wearing the flag - I have no problem with that. "
--I do have a problem with that. It is a big deal in my opinion. Being disrespectful of our country's flag is not something that I like.

Point three:"Everybody just needs to ease up and not be so uptight. We only get one go round here. "
--I don't think we need to "ease up" about sleeze being shown on prime time television. If nobody stands up for anything, then you get just what you stand up for.

I respect your opinions, but respectfully disagree with them.

he thru it to someone behind him who then thru it on the ground...

entertaining the troops does not give one the right to disrespect the very flag that the troops fight to defend..

it makes me wonder if he went overseas to entertain because he cares about the troops..or because it's good publicity and good for sales...

I totally agree.

And if then Super Bowl is supposedly such a "family event", then maybe they should not air ads for alcohol.

Face it, the Super Bowl is something ADULTS watch, its not an event for kids. Super Bowl parties, which almost always have alcohol, are for adults. So spare me the "what about the CHILDREN" outcry that I keep hearing everywhere.

So much was made out of this halftime show that people seem to forget that a FOOTBALL GAME was played. The Pats did a great job, and that last quarter was incredible.

Maybe in your sphere, GG. But I have a son who has been a sports nut since he was very small. He's been watching the Super Bowl practically all his life. Granted, he's 17 now, so I think HE rather enjoyed the show. :) :) :)

The Super Bowl is a SPORTING event. Why would you consider it a not-for-children event??

I would not be unhappy if they didn't run ads for alcohol,

my superbowl parties are alcohol free, as are all my parties and I never have invited guests that don't show, so apparently alcohol isn't a neccessity for a good time...

if it's not for kids, I guess my parents were bad people, I grew up watching it......as have my children...

Football is a family event. I don't know how anyone could see it any other way. It's advertised as such, they have little leagues, football in schools and highschools.
Things do happen, but the people who put MTV in charge of the halftime made a big error in judgement. If they've been alive in the last 10 years, they should know MTV is not for kids.
It's not Janet's, Kid's or any of the other performers fault that they were chosen and allowed to put on such a show. They could have very well tamed everything down, but obviously MTV didn't want that.
I may have enjoyed the music, but I don't allow my kids to watch that.
And what is it with men who feel compelled to grab themselves on tv? Is it so small that they have to check to see if it's still there or what? That has been allowed for far too long.

Justin got a little too into his song. Whether it was an accident, or he did it accidently on purpose no one will really know for sure. But it was tasteless. Maybe, just maybe, it will cause things to be cleaned up a little.

Gee, my "party" consisted of me, my boyfriend, and our 7 year olds. We love sports and we watch them all the time. Gee, the boys are gonna' be bummed when we tell them they can't play baseball this year. :p

As for future Super Bowl half time shows let me just say

BRING BACK THE MARCHING BANDS!!
