we have 5 cats...and they are bound and determined to tear the tree down. Short of taking the tree down and putting it away, what can I do? They climb it, smack the ornaments across the room, etc.

I only have one cat - and he's always managing to knock the tree down. I can't imagine having five of them. Last year we solved the problem by tying the tree to the ceiling. We just tied the top of it to a hook in the ceiling. He couldn't knock the whole tree down, but he was still very interested in the ornaments. I've given up on putting them down low. Everything has to be up high. It doesn't stop him from jumping for them, he just does it a little less often.

Kitties and Christmas trees just don't mix. :D

Funny, my cat doesn't touch the tree, just lays under it like she's hiding from us all.

Spend a day sitting near the tree with a squirt bottle. Maybe after they get soaked a few dozen times they'll figure out it's not a good thing to play in or near the tree. I think Petsmart or Petco carries a cat repellent spray. I'm not sure if it smells bad to humans too, but it may work for the kitties...

Good luck! :)
