I would think as long as Catalonian authorities keep things under control that there wouldn't be a safety issue. It might take a little while for people to accept that things are under control and will stay that way though. Now if Spain moves to retake Catalonia by force? That's a whole different kettle of fish.
We have friends in Madrid who travel to Catalonia all the time (he's a travel writer for the NYT) so I'm keeping a very close eye on his feed to see how things are going. I fear they're verging on another civil war. It's hard to put the genie back in the lamp once you've let it out.

Last I heard Spain is moving to revoke autonomy for Catalonia. I'm really afraid shots will be fired, and Spain doesn't have the best modern record when it comes to politically-based violence.
Hopefully the EU will lean heavily on Spain to resolve this peacefully. The problem is, from what I've read, Spain needs Catalonia a lot more than Catalonia needs Spain.
I've been following this for some time and have kept thinking - Didn't Spain learn anything from their history with Franco?!!!!
Like others have said, Spain needs Catalunya more than Catalunya needs Spain. It's like if the west coast succeeded from the USA - no matter how much people complain about the Left Coast, we supply the rest of the country with lots of food and tax dollars.
