Hello!

Well I have a kitten called Bailey who is 6 months old.
We are looking at having him 'done'. I have never owned a cat before and just wondered for others who have done this, how does the cat react? Will his personality change totally? :confused3

I'm just a little worried that's all!
Anything anyone could tell me would be much appreciated!

We had Akai (Male) and Maddy (female) done together last year. Its only a five minute op for a male and although they feel sorry for themselves you can't see where they have had surgery after the affects of the anesthetic have worn off they are more or less back to normal. We haven't really noticed much difference in his behaviour he has always been a lovable and fussy cat. Maddy though became much more lovable after her op. If you don't have him done he will start to spray and that really stinks!!!!! Its a personal choice but i would defo say have him done.

Our cats' personalities didn't change at all, other than that they were a little bit calmer after being done. They weren't happy for a few days afterwards, but were then back to their normal selves. You are doing the best for your kitten by getting him sorted out. It is very uncomfortable for them otherwise, and will cause you no end of problems!

If anything i think it has made all our male cats more dopey and chilled out!!

Would definitely agree with Deedee above - a male cat spraying is not pleasant.

Usually having a male cat "done!" can calm him down a bit. Our cat Muzzy who is now about 8 was a bit wild to start with, but once he had the "snip" he became a really lovely cat and always wants to sit close to you.

Still has his mad moments tho'.

Hi,

Thanks all, I want to have him done. It was just that he is such a loving affectionate cat all the time and I was worried he may suddenly turn evil or something?!?!?!?
Does it take them long to heal after?

I have never known a cat to turn evil afterwards, and I have had cats my whole life. Don't worry, your cat will still be affectionate, maybe even more so!! It doesn't take long for them to heal and they are back to normal very quickly paw:

Using 2 bricks is the quickest way of doing it. Does it hurt? Only if you catch your thumbs inbetween.:lmao:

But seriously, it will help stop him wandering off every now and then. Also, the smell of his urine will not be as strong.

I have had cats for a long time now and would always advise getting them "done". However, I would wait until he's 7 months old to let him fill out a bit (also helps in the odd brawl every now and then). Our kitten Oliver is six months old now and he is due at the vets the middle of next month. Their personality doesn't change (Oliver will be our third male). They just look at where their privates used to be and then look at you with "that" look of; "I'll get you back for this!!!":scared1:

If anything it's more likely he will be more affectionate and less independant once he's been fixed.

We had our Male & Female done at 7 months and they both recovered quickly. Mary has always like attention but Fred less so before the op but now he's first in queue for a cuddle.

:yay:
