Our kitten is 13 weeks now, and I'm not sure if he is just discovering his MEW, but he cries all the time, now, even if he is sitting in the same room w/ us & can see us! He mews for food, we give him food. He mews when he is just sitting there, so we play with him w/ a toy, and for both of these, he STOPS, but then he'll just walk around making funny mewing noises.

Think he is just figuring out that he can make noise? He was at the doctor last week for his shots, so I really don't think he is SICK. The doctor would have noted something & his behavior is the same, other than the mewing.

What's wrong with Pickles? (the kitty):confused3

If he is un-neutered, he may be beginning to sexually mature. Perhaps there is a female in heat in your neighborhood?

I have to correct you....it's meow:goodvibes

My bad! There is such a thing as Mew!

There, got that out of the way!:thumbsup2 My cat (10 years old) sometimes just meows for several minutes. Sometimes it is for something valid (food or water bowl empty) and sometimes she just wants to get loved on (those are my favorite ) and occasionally, she just wants to hear herself meow.

I think Pickles is just practicing, for future irritation for his owners.:lmao:

He is an indoors only cat & no houses around us- we moved to a new area, so we are the first house. Do you think that is the problem? He has been a little agressive, but hasn't sprayed, or anything. The vet says we have to wait 'til he is 6 months to get him fixed!

He just sounds like he is the most depressed cat in the world! Even with his toys and food and us holding him :guilty:

:teacher: Thanks!! :] *MEOW!*

You may just have a talker. My cat has complete conversations with me. I say something he meows back and on and on. Sometimes I think he is the only man in the house that listens to me. (I have a DH and DS-10)

He also will just walk around the house meowing. Just a talker...like his Mom!

These replies are making me feel A LOT better- I was worried that he was just in pain, or something? No reason to be, but I was worried he hated his house, all of a sudden? I'd love it if he was a talker- what a sweetie! :]

No, he's not in pain, he IS a pain! ;)

Sometimes when my cat chases me around the house meowing, and she has everything she needs, I just throw her outside (very gently in case my graphic description upset anyone!):thumbsup2

Mew and Meow are two separate cat words. Mew generally is soft, cute and "please pet me?" While MEOW is being shouted at. Mouth wide open, whiskers extended, direct stare if you are nearby.

I have a mew-er AND a meow-er. The male is the mouthy one. I'm constantly saying "stop yelling at me!" He will meow in another room, come stalking into my room at full voice then will run to me when I put my hand down. At first I thought he couldn't see me and was lost, but the hand thing leaves that out.

I love all the chirps etc I get though. One of my favs is the "silent mew". Mouth moving slightly but no sound for human ears. Hhhmmm - maybe they are swearing at me???:lmao:

He he, my parents have a Pickles, she does have some Siamese in her, and she is a talker. There were 6 months when my Dad was in WA and my Mom was in FL, and every time either my Mom or I were on the phone, my Dad had to give her the phone and we'd have a conversation. Once my Mom and Dad were living in the same house again, she stopped talking into the phone, but I guess when the phone rings she still shows up and has to make her presence known. She is the most talkative cat they have had, and every sound is different. Not a clue what she is saying half the time, but she has an extensive vocabulary.

As a cat owner and lover  I have never heard of "mew"! So I just looked up "mew" and found this:

This is for all you cat owners out there! As cat owners, we all know that cats have a vocabulary all their own and they are good at getting their points across. How many of us have given in to the pleas of a hungry cat demanding to be fed? Or how many of us are greeted with a meow from our kitty pal when we get home? Have you noticed how different those calls are?

I have two cats of my own and they certainly do make sure that they get what they want. I have noticed that they use different calls for different reasons.

The Soft Little Mew
This is my favorite sound. It is just so cute! One of my cats uses this sound to ask a question very nicely. He will bring a toy over to me and set it down right next to me and sit and just give a little 'mew'. It is the cutest thing! Who could resist such a nice and polite request? So I end up tossing the toy a few times.

The Loud MEOW
The loud MEOW when accompanied with a direct stare is a demand. Usually it is around mealtime when they are hungry and they want to be fed NOW!

The Meow-Purr
This sound is characteristic of Maine Coons and is a sound they make when they are feeling good. They are essentially saying, 'Hey, I like you too." It is a meow followed by a purr. It sounds like meowprr. One of my cats is a Maine Coon mix and when I first heard him, I thought something was wrong with his voice and then I thought he just has a raspy voice. But then I did some research and found that the sound is made by all Maine Coons.

The Yeow
Yeow means 'Get off my property!' Or if it is a shrieked Yeow it mean 'OUCH!' In both instances, the cat is under stress.

Cats have a vast vocabulary that extends far beyond these sounds. Once we understand what each sound means, we are in a better position to understand our cats and also to communicate back to them.

Who knew??:confused3

Sorry OP, I will correct my correction!:goodvibes

I have a 15 year old cat who has never shut up from day one! :lmao: I am serious - it is constant. Now, she is extremely neurotic and codependent, so she's usually wailing so someone will pick her up and hold her like a baby - but still - it's incessant.

My sister's boyfriend was over and having dinner with us and eventually, he finally said, "Who is that cat talking to?" Beats me! So you may just have a talker. Hopefully not as bad as my crazy cat. ;)

Cats can be "fixed" younger than 6 months. I think 8 weeks is the earliest, but I would never recommend to have it done that young. I have always heard 4 months is the ideal time. That way they usually won't reach sexual maturity, and boys will probably never learn to spray. We had Nemo done at 4 months.

I'll agree with some other posters and say that some cats just talk more than others...My cat isn't a huge talker, but when he decides to, he doesn't shut up for a while...he'll just sit there meowing..just to hear himself talk I think...

it shouldn't be anything to worry about.

We have one cat who, when in the far reaches of the house, will MEOW-ROW-ROW-ROW-ROW!!!!!!!! For no apparent reason. It's about the only noise he makes. The rest of the time he is SILENT.

We have another that when he manages to find one of DH's socks, he will pick it up in his mouth and give very loud, muffled (due to the sock) MEOW, MEOW, MEOW. Usually in the middle of the night. You'd think it would be enough to get DH to pick up his dang socks but NOOOOOOO (but that's another thread).

Anyway, I think you have a talker. You would see different behavior if there was pain. Cat's usually hide when they're in pain or not feeling well. Out and about and yowling is a good thing (for them at least).

They may grow out of it as they get older. But may be not.

We have a talker, too. In fact, that's how we found him. I went out on our back porch and heard this cat meowing. Don't know how he got there or where he came from, but he had a lot to say. He was about 10 months old and skin and bones. He was also very scared of us. It took a lot of time and patience, but we won him over and he is such a love! We thought once he was secure he would stop blabbing so much, but no. So we assume his mother kicked him out because he was too loud! She couldn't teach him to be stealthy!

He doesn't seem to get that sometimes a cat shouldn't make noise because there is a big St. Bernard around who would like to chase him! Thank goodness the dog doesn't hear very well :rotfl2:.

So, as others have said, some cats are just talkers!

I have a talker too. We call him "alarm kitty". He just walks around sounding his alarm- no reason. He is healthy, always has food and water, gets more attention than he really wants and has a nice porch to chill outside on. Usually if you respond to his alarm, he runs away for fear that he will get picked up. :confused3 So yeah- I agree- some are just mouthy little buggers.
