We have three cats. Sometimes they vomit. The stains make me think there is a tremendous amount of dye in the food. Is anyone familiar with a dye-free adult cat food?

I use Nutro Max. I have 5 cats, a few with sensitive stomachs, and they all do well with this food. It can be found at Pet stores. They have a hairball formula, if this is contributing to the problem.

I don't know if there is such a thing. Do a google search on it. My vats can only eat meow Mix. Everything else makes them vomit even he hairball formulas.

Supermarket petfood is horrible! If you want the lowdown, read "The Foods Pets Die For". The brands of petfood that you should look for are:

Petguard
LickYourChops
Wellness
Spots Stew

These are all easy to find at Whole Foods and Petfood direct. If you buy Petguard in the 12oz cans, it is actually cheaper than the supermarket junk. These are clean foods with no dyes, rendered meat, or byproducts in them. Petguard saved my cats life.

Is "The Foods Pets Die For" a book - Can it be found in the major bookstores?
Thank you for the information. WOW - I thought I was doing right by using IAMS.

I have heard that IAMS is not a good product, however, I have never used it. I have fed Nutro exclusively for 11 years now, both cat and dog, dry only, and have never had a problem. The clean up after the pets is much better as well.

We use science diet food and just bought camel colored furniture so that it's the same color as cat puke ;). That's my tried and true method for dealing with cat puke stains.

Had a really good chuckle at that:p :p :p thanks Lisa ;) ;) ;) for making me laugh:)

I think that I ordered it off of Amazon. Don't read that book when you're eating...soooo gross :(

As for IAMS, I think that it's made by P+G. It's just supermarket petfood. Nutro is supposedly somewhat better, but does have filler ingredients. The foods that I mentioned above are the "clean" diets that are readily available. There are some others like Wysong and California Natural that are good, but that I can't find easily in my area at least.

Science Diet is not something that I'd ever feed my pet ever, either. I think that this one was mentioned in "The Foods Pets Die For" if I'm not mistaken.

Supposedly the ideal petfood diet is raw, since animals need the enzymes in uncooked meat. It doesn't make them sick like it would a human. Raw is better for pets. My sister started her puppy on raw from the beginning, and it's worked out well for her. I tried to change my cats over, but it didn't work out for me so I still use Petguard. There are some great prepared raw diets out there if you're interested, though. Steve's and Bravo come to mind.

I also went through several foods that made my cat vomit and drove me crazy (nearly white carpet). Luckily I was able to get most of the staining out with Spot Shot. However, I wasn't about to clean vomit up on a daily basis. The one food that was really bad was Purina Indoor Cat, another one made her puke up bright red all the time. Then I switched to Royal Canin brand, the Indoor 27 formula . It's worked wonders and I can't remember ONE TIME she's puke since I put her on it and she loves it! I've only been able to find it at PetCo - but all the employees highly recommended it over Iams, Eukanuwba, etc.

It's a little expensive, but so was my carpet... I'd rather pay for the food than re-carpeting.

IAMS is bad!
I just spent $1,300 to figure out why my one cat is so sick, he was losing weight, not eating, vomiting, etc. All his blood test came back normal (kidney, liver, etc)
Anyway, we did an ultrasound & found that his intestines were very thick. After exploring them more (through scope surgery) we found out he has a bowel disease.

The cause??? IAMS products (or that is what the vet thinks)
He said all commerical cat food is bad for cats. They really should not be on it.

My cat is now on IVD--Innovative Veterinary Diets food. You can only get in through your veterinary. He will have to be on this for the rest of his life now.

If I could do over I would not use any commerical (Iams, Sciene Diet, Purina, etc) cat food. My other cat is off all that food also now.

The flip side, my cat is a totally different cat now. He is eating, gaining some weight back (he lost so much that he was underweight so the vet wants him to gain some back), is HAPPY again & has not vomitted in a week!!!!! YEAH!!!!!

We use the new Science Diet Natural Care dry food (didn't like the ingredients in the normal Science Diet), and Nutro Max moist. Much better ingredients than your average cat food, and the cats all love it. :)

We use Nutro-Max Complete Care. My cats have been eating Nutro products for 12+years. I am very pleased not only with the vomit issues, but low stool volume and minimal stool odor.

We use the Hill Science Diet Natural, too. We tried Iams (she wouldn't eat it) and Purina Indoor (ended up at the vets after that one) but now stick with the Science Diet Natural.
