we are booking a 4 day cruise tomorrow. Is it worth the extra $200 to have a cat 4? Or should we get a 5 or 6? There will be 2 adults & 2 kids ages 9 & 6. Also, what is the difference between 5 & 6?

Hi golflm........... welcome to the DIS!

The only difference between a 5 and a 6 is the deck you're on. Cat 5 is on deck 7 and cat 6 is on deck 6. Both of those categories are about 30 - 40 square feet smaller than a cat 4. The cat 4 has a Murphy bed that folds down out of the wall near the door to the verandah.

The Cat 4 is a little bigger. It has the fold down 5th bed as outahere said. THere is esssentially no difference between a 5 and a 6.

Only you can decide whether or not it is worth the extra money to go from a 6 to a 4. My guess is that you'll spend very little time in your cabin, and the time you will want to be there will be on the verandah. Thus, I would say that for me, it's not worth the extra money...I could spend it on "good things on the ship." Also, Cat 4 cabins tend to go quickly as this is the lowest level that will allow 5 people...so bigger families snap them up.

I thought I would weigh in on this.

We have sailed in both a Cat 5 and Cat 6. I agree completely with outahere, in that there is no difference between those two categories. I would have never known that we were on a different deck when we dropped to a Cat 6.

DH and I thought breifly about a Cat 4. However, with just DH, DS6 and myself, Cat 6 has plenty of room. If we had another child, I might feel like I could use the room, but not in this case. DH and I spend a lot of time out on the verandah, which makes the cabin seem even rommier (sp?).

So, depending on the size of your family, I vote to save the $$ and spend the money on bahama mamas or konk koolers. LOL

We got a free upgrade from a cat.6 to a cat. 4 room. I liked the cat. 4, but I'm not sure I would pay the extra money for it. It was neat staying on the same floor as the suites though. Whenever they were cleaning them they would leave the door open and I could get a glimpse in.

Cathy :)
