Cat 3 - inroom dining

Cali, the cash tips are for the room service folks. :) If they bring you food and drink that is not charged (and the only thing you would pay for is soda, bottled water or alcohol) there is no charge slip to sign, so we tip room service a few dollars each time. You do need CASH for that. :)

The Wonder and Magic have different stateroom decors so they are slightly different in the Cat. 3s as well.

Michelle, we did not order anything that we had to pay for. They brought the slip for the sole purpose of filling out the gratuity portion, as the "food/beverage total" was $0.00 :)

Really? That is new then. :) I've never had them bring a charge slip for gratuities only -- interesting!

i'll bet they have started bringing receipts because people didn't have cash to tip (thinking, as they've been told, everything can go on their key to the world card) and so the servers were not getting tips. jmho.

as for the "fire cruise," as i call it, and the evacuation....we had to evacuate our cabins and stood on deck 4 for over an hour. the boats were readied and a couple were actually swung out (i heard), but the fire was under control before we needed the boats. there was another cruise ship not far in the distance sitting and waiting for a call from the magic should they need to go to the boats. fortunately, it didn't come to that.

there were a lot of sick people that morning from the smoke (it was pouring off the ship when we first heard the running on deck and we popped out on our veranda). one of our sons got real nauseous, and one of the crew ran to get him a barf bag. he was also allowed to sit (they made us stand through the whole hour with that lovely orange vest on). fortunately for me, our little one was only 3 and freaking out with the vest, so he didn't have to wear his and once i started holding him, they let me take mine off as well.

several folks got moved around, though the ship was full and i can't imagine how they did it. the smell of smoke remained for days. i have pics of the damage...will try to post them as well.

I've wondered about the fire cruise. Do they know what started the fire? Did you ever see any flames? Was the fire at the top of the stack only? Or inside somewhere? And exactly when was the cruise. I hope you don't mind the questions, I've just always been very interested in the "fire cruise" :-)

Oh Yeah, We close to breaking 200 now :-)

I'm so glad I wasn't on that sailing, I would have had an asthma attack...and it would have been worsened by the clautrophobia (Wearing a life jacket is a REALLY bad thing for people with claustrophobia like mine!). Wondering what they did for people with asthma or other breathing problems?

We stayed in a Cat 3 last Jan, and always planned on ordering breakfast from room service but never did. We did order late night things however like chicken strips and soup. We also had more soda brought up (big mistake cost us $$). We always tipped them about $2 a trip. There was alwys food in the room from our concierge so we never really used the room ervice that much. You will love the space!

We were in 8080 and I do have photos. I dont know how to post them here but I do know how to scan and email if you like.

I would love to see a photo or 2 of your cabin.... if you have a chance to scan a couple - but don't go to too much trouble.

My address is

Thanx for everything... by the way.. did you hear noises from above you?

>>^..^<<

I will scan and email them to you. I just finished our cruise book (a year later!) so the memories are still fresh. We did hear noise from above, like they were rolling barrels or something. That is my only whine about our room. Otherwise the concierge was great and more than accomodating.

Roll out the barrels.... we'll have a barrel of fun...

We stayed in cabin 8048, midship. While we did hear some noise during the day (kids running, ping pong balls, etc.), it was VERY bad starting about 4:30am. When the crew was setting up for the day, you could hear them dragging the chairs and tables back into place, hear carts rolling to/from the snack bars and towel hampers, etc. We complained to the concierge staff and Guest Services for 2 days before it quieted down a little..... key phrase - "a little". It was still very annoying to be awakened from a sound sleep by the noise. Fortunately, DS8 was exhausted from the day before and didn't wake up, but it certainly bothered me and DW.

Because of the noise, we changed our ressie for the April, 2004 cruise, to a Cat 4 directly under the hair salon (8512). Hopefully it will be much quieter.

Because no one (in any room category) should have to endure that noise, I sincerely hope that DCL considers the noise from the top deck when/if they build another ship. We had a top deck suite on the Norway, and the sun deck above us was covered in astro turf and we couldn't hear any noise.

...the fire cruise was march 9-16, 2002. the fire itself was on thursday early morning. they never told us what started it (of course). there was lots of speculation that it started in the incinerator and flew up the stacks as debris, but only dcl knows for sure.

they had to close off the mickey pool, so they opened up the adult pool to kids and the cast pool to adults only (i didn't hear about that until much later or i would have been there just to say i had!). the stacks were fairly crumpled from the heat, and they had dcl officials fly out to castaway cay on friday to view the damage. as soon as we hit port canaveral, they had workers up there fixing the damage.

we didn't go up on deck 9 or 10 during the fire. i imagine they had closed it off quickly. rumor had it that a couple teens who'd fallen asleep on deck spotted the fire and called in. there were all sorts of rumors flying including the teens started the fire, that when they tried to reach someone on the phone, they were ignored as playing a prank, etc. but, my dh talked with the father of one of the boys later in the day, and he confirmed that his son did spot it and call it in, but he was not involved in starting it. they did have trouble finding someone who would take them seriously. of course, dcl insisted they spotted the problem on their sensors before the teens called it in, but there's some doubt there.

i know what you mean, ducklite, about the asthma and claustrophobia. i'm only mildly asthmatic and claustrophobic, but i have a big problem wearing those life vests. i've always been able to use having to hold my little one as an excuse not to wear it. i don't think i'll be able to get away with that much longer. i can survive the drill, but that hour on deck with all those people so close and the life vest....well, i was more than happy when they let us go back to our cabins!

Gretel from our board was so kind to email me photos of her family during their cruise in Category 3!

If anyone wants a look... here are the photos.

As you can see from my photos, never add Mr. Bubble to your jacuzzi tub! I left the room for a second and came back to find my daughter just a floating head!

By the way Gretel... was that cabin (8080) in the Magic or the Wonder?

And what was in those great gift baskets for the girls?

>>^..^<<

Cabin 8080 on the Magic.
The baskets I had sent over from Shirley (why cant I remember her store?) The Perfect Gift?
They had soda, a beach towel, sunglasses, suntan lotion, candy, cookies and other little items. Also a card from "Mickey and Minnie" welcoming them to the Magic!

Hi Outahere..

Do you have any photos of 8048 you can post a link to or email me? I'm sure we would all love to see it!

I hope you have a 'quieter' stay in the cabin under the hair salon.

>>^..^<<

8048 would be identical to 8080 but maybe Outahere has some differnet shots.
