Our last night at dinner, Sid, our Head Server passed along some info about Castaway Cay. He said that there are plans to build a bigger gift shop. (Current one is nice, but small). ...AND...Disney has plans to build a hotel on Castaway Cay. He went on to say that passengers would arrive and depart by ship. Has anyone else heard about this?

No, but when my DH and I were there we discussed how great some kind of resort would be there. I would go for sure....

When we cruised last year, they told us that the island is wonderful during the day but horrible at night so there is no way they would want people spending the night. Also, all the food & water is brought from the ship, it would be nearly impossible to bring enough stuff for people to spend days and nights there...

I heard similar information as Diamond_Girls. Apparently, the bugs are nasty at night and there really aren't enough modern conveniences to build a resort. But...hey...this is Disney...you never know!

I mentioned to a CM stationed on CC that we'd love to spend more than 1 day there. She said that Disney is looking into different options, but that at about 5pm every night, all year, the biting bugs come out and they are really bad. When I got home, I heard someone else talking about a hotel there. If I had my druthers......we'd spend the day there, pull out and go to another port, and then come back another day. That way, you'd get two days there, not be there for the bugs, not have to "move stuff to a hotel", and it would be something to look forward to with a break in between. I think if we were there 2 days in a row, it would become "not so special" as it is now. Half the fun is the anticipation!

Several months ago this was brought up on this board. One point that was made then was how low the island sits to sea level. This was a problem in that any storm would be devastating to a hotel structure. This was right after the whole island had to be rebuilt, dock included due to a storm destroying almost everything on the island. I am sure others active on this board remember this don't you??.smjj

Bugs aside - For me personally, a big part of the appeal of Castaway Cay is its UNDER-development. I have heard rumors of an expanded gift shop, which would be fine. But even if it was possible, IMHO a hotel would detract from the beauty and peace of Castaway Cay. I hope they never do it!

When we were there earlier this month one of the sales clerks was saying that they could never further develop the island as the bugs are really bad and they sometimes have trouble with them during the day. She advise we rinse ourselves well before we go back onboard as they have had situations where the bugs made it back to the cabins and it was not a pleasant experience for the guests! Undevelopment of the island is part of the charm!

smjj - was that in 2000? because when we went (in 2000) there was some sort of construction going on but we never questioned it.
