Does anyone know if they are still giving medals for the 5K?

If you don't make it back before the CM wanders off to do other things, can you still get your medal?

I know it's a cheap rubber thing, but my DW figures if she does the time, she should get her medal to show it!

We were on CC on Friday and I did see people walking with their medals as we were on the tram.

How long before they wonder off? Now I'm worried. I'll probably not make my fastest time of 54 minutes by a long shot.

I have heard of the people handing out the medals still being there two or three hours later for the slower walkers, don't know if that is still true, but it has been in the past.

When we have done it they usually announce if they are gone when you return you can get your medal in the store near the finish line.

The medals are really nice medals now.

And the CMs will be there for AT LEAST an hour after the start.

Does the bib number have a significance? Is that the running total of all the participants? or the participants in that particular year?

The number has absolutely no significance that I know of, and they don't even put them out in any particular order, maybe the number of runners since they started doing the race? I took the top 2 off the pile and as you can see they are out of sequence. Last year my number was only 4 digits. We had approximately 300 people signed up to do the race, and I know personally of 4 that kept going to the beach instead of doing the race. Corey the crew member in charge of getting us out to the starting line said they loose on average 30% of the participants who never cross the finish line.

So that would be 30% that forego the medal I take it.

Yes. There is no cost to the race, so nothing lost. When they first started doing the race, people would sign up to get off the boat first, but the runners aren't off first anymore. The last 2 years we were having to walk through regular guests who were getting off the boat to get to the start line. It wasn't a huge amount of people, but they were letting people off the boat.

You also end up doing more than a 5K because of the walk to the start line. Corey made mention of doing a 6.27K - not sure if he was joking or they actually know that is the total distance including the walk from the ship to the start line.

I believe it, that is a pretty good walk to get to the starting line.

Yes. We walked most of the way, and picked up our medal long after most runners were finished with the race.

I don't know when they started the island run, but even in feb 2013 on my first Disney cruise and first Cay run, we didn't get off the ship first.

I don't have access to the exact data right now but it was about a mile-ish to the start. Then the 5k isn't quite a 5k. Then you walk wherever you walk. :)

For me I go back to the ship to clean up. Not everyone does that, and I didn't do that the first or...4th? time (that time we had a cabana).

Okay, I am glad they are still handing them out. I was told the CM usually goes about other things in about an hour after the race starts, so I wasn't sure if you could still get your medal after they left.

Last Friday, I finished in one hour, one minute, and there was still someone at the finish line handing out the medals.

Cory was too funny -- but don't get him riled! He durned near took the head off the cast member who drove the cart up the loop and almost ran down some of the runners!

That guy deserved it. He did that twice during the run when I was on the path.
And did you see poor Cory running in his sandals down the loop to go take care of the water tower that fell over? He was sweating as bad as the rest of us.
