I just saw on my local news that works for Disney in Florida rallied for better pay. Has anyone else seen this?

I saw it. Good for them.

I'm not knocking them for rallying, but why "good for them"? Presumably they agreed to their pay when they took the job, and they're free to take their skills elsewhere if they think they can make more money.

Last but not least, increasing workers pay will just force Disney to up ticket/meal/hotel charges, which means we pay more to visit.

It will force Disney?

Disney will raise prices no matter what.

As long as there is a steady stream of people willing to work for the mouse, they don't have to pay a good wage. Just look at how many posts there are here on the DIS saying, "We are moving to Florida and want to work for Disney." Current CMs aren't treated well because they are so easily replaceable.

Disagree; this is why. One goes on an interview; agrees to xyz; takes the job; works hard year after year; no raise, ever: little to no medical benefits offered; Not Right! Businesses take advantage (not all, but many do). Starting at a minimum wage does not mean one should stay at minimum wage indefinitely. I have friends who work for Disney; very hard, dedicated workers who have been trying to make more money; but always denied; who have been trying to become full time; but denied. Not Right!

As for Disney raising prices; They do it anyway; Didn't you hear they just raised ticket prices?

I say good for them. They should gather and stand strong together. Look at unions.

No one is forcing them to work for Disney. If they are unhappy with their pay then take your skills and go somewhere else. Disney is a business and has the right to determine what they need to pay to keep the people they need. Businesses everywhere only pay what they need to to keep the people and skills they need to be profitable.

Plus Disney is well known not to be a high payer, at any level.

True, they could walk, they could also rise to the occasion and stand up for what they think is right! Just because "Disney" pays very low scale does not mean it is right.

From what I can tell, this is a union movement. Right before their contract comes up. hmmmm.

So I'm curious, what is "right" when it comes to worker pay and benefits? If working conditions (pay, benefits, hours, etc) are so terrible, find another job.

And yes, I realize Disney just raised prices. Do you honestly think Disney will sacrifice profit to pay their workers more?

Again, I have no problems with employees protesting. I just don't understand the "good for them".

I agree with these two people 100%. Yes, it is a fact, Disney is a business out to make money. People, my guess is looks at it as a magical place where dreams comes true and where everything is gumdrops and lollipops. Well, with out the CMs those gumdrops and lollipops would be very sour.

Disney has no problems raising their prices for their customers and yet refuses to give their CMs a decent wage to live on. Very sour gumdrops and lollipops if you ask me. Don't get me wrong, I love Disney. I loved the vacations we have taken there, but IMO the business, just like many others to be fair has become very money hungry. It was just stated recently that MK is the highest priced park for a daily visit. That should tell you something.

Yes, they claim they give you other options by lower prices if you go extra day. Well, maybe some people can not budget all those extra days into their budget. I know we can't any more. As I have said before Disney is no longer within our grasp. We can not go there any more. They have priced themselves out of our budget. Just doesn't feel very family friendly any more.

I just come on here to dream and remember our past vacations.

You've never asked for a raise? Or combined about something about your job even though you knew about it from the beginning.

yes I've asked for a raise, and if I didn't get it I had 3 choices, stay for what they were paying me, find the same job somewhere else that would pay more, improve my skills so I could either get more money there or go somewhere else.

I didn't rally. I took responsibility for my own fate

Because no one is "forcing" you to when for them does not mean it's ok to treat them unfairly.

Everyone has the right to fair and honorable treatment. I see nothing wrong with demanding a part of the rewards if your success is built on my labor.

Do you guys accept any type of treatment from your boss with the excuse "I can go some where else?"

A rally is taking responsibility. It just a public way. It is saying, no you do not get to take advantage of me simply because I am an employee.
It also says that you have a policy that more than a few people have an issue with.
I take responsibility for my fate, one way I do that is by NOT allowing some one use me. Whether it's a spouse, a friend or an employee.

It all depends on how you look at it, some chose to stand their ground and try to change inequality, some say, I'll leave.

Years (and years) ago there was a strike at Disneyland. The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson (like I said, it was years ago) came up with a song to the Battle Hymn of the Republic. It went something like this:

My eyes have seen the horrors of a strike in Disneyland.
The seven dwarfs are throwing rocks cuz Snow White just got canned.
Donald Duck is swearing
And Goofy broke my arm.
I wish that we had gone to Knotts Berry Farm.

So quit! that is not allowing someone to take advantage of you!
whining in public and wanting others to speak up for you and do something about it is not.

So I'm still wondering, what is "right" or "fair" when it comes to wages and benefits?

To me, as long as an employer is following the law (paying minimum wage, following OT rules, etc), then it's "right" AND "fair".

Do I want my employer to "share" their "rewards"? Sure I do. Does that mean I think they're being unfair if they don't? Nope.
