Cast Member Steals Phone

I just hope that someone from Disney Cruise Lines is monitoring these boards. This way if they didn't think that this a big PR nightmare they should realize it now.

I hope this person gets her phone back.

I just went through this on vacation with a lost iphone. We went to an Apple store and tracked the phone to exactly where we thought it was lost. It was inside the convention expo we had attended and it wasn't moving. So we went back to the expo as we knew no one had found it. Fortunately, we found it under the table at one of the booths we had stopped at earlier in the day. Kudos to Apple for the great software capabilities.

If he managed to do anything on the ship's wifi, this guy is a criminal genius despite not realizing that he was sending his photos to this woman's computer.... I'm not disputing the validity of this woman's story but how in the world did that iPhone manage to send everything to the cloud using the ship's wifi? Hmmm.. Maybe he did it in port though ....

It looks like the phone has been missing since April and the photos just uploaded to her iCloud this month. The photos could have been slowly uploading to the iCloud every time he logged onto the ship's wifi.

Ok I am an Iphone newbie so I have a couple of questions.

2. Ok, assuming no password he turned off "find my iPhone app".. the pics can be uploaded to iCloud ONLY if the phone is still activated right?

Guess the phone's owner still has her phone activated and is attempting to track it down on her own.. but the cell phone bill must be huge.

I have an iphone ....I can still use the wifi function on the phone and use it as an ipod. All of my pictures show up on the icloud when I am connected to icloud. So that doesn't surprise me.

A friend has given her old iPhones to her kids to use as iTouches after she upgrades them. She doesn't have the data plan for them, but they can connect to her home modem to get online or anywhere there is free wifi available and do anything you could with a data plan except make phone calls. I checked my iTouch last night and found the photo stream feature on it as well.

I'm just wondering how anyone would know if this person did steal it, or he actually "purchased" it from the person who stole it. It could even have changed hands a few times. Maybe there is a way to find out the first "transmission" from the phone after it was lost or stolen. Is that even possible? :confused3

Forgive me because I don't know much about Iphones, but if she reported it stolen, wouldn't someone need to register the phone in order to "sign up" for a plan and use it? Once it's reported, can it not be "deactivated"?

I hope they stay with the story and we find out what really happened.

If the iPhone were de-activated, it would basically become an iPod Touch.

I'm just surprised the alleged thief didn't find some way to reset the seatings. If the person is uploading to iCloud, then that person can also be getting the owner's email, push notifications, etc. It basically becomes a glorified camera and iPod.

I would say "Nelson" is certainly suspect, but he could have bought the phone off of somebody else, not turned it into lost & found, or maybe his girlfriend/wife stole it . . .

At any rate, if all of this plays out as it seems, he wins the Darwin award.

My guess is that the phone is not being used as a phone but as an iTouch. So it can surf the web, etc, with free wifi, but not make calls. So it doesn't need a plan.

ETA Dirk responded above me quicker.

In the last 30 minutes or so, the number of "shares" on her gallery has gone from 905 to 968. I guess you can say it is viral now.

I have always had so much trust of the employees in the past.

Yep, as of this morning 2216 shares. It's spreading like wildfire. :rotfl:

edited to add: in the time it took me to type this post it went to 2222 shares. ;)

Wow! I agree, the captions on the pictures are hilarious. I saw Pierre is in one of those pictures, I loved him. He was everywhere and was very entertaining.

Interesting the number of people who don't want to believe this could happen on a Disney ship, with a Disney CM.

:yo-yo:

Or perhaps they simply chose to see the bright side and would say the same regardless of what cruise line it was. Or perhaps they believe in innocent until proven guilty? We don't have all the facts of the case to make a judgment.

Me? I'm a cynic who deals with criminals day in and day out. So I tend to believe he's likely in the wrong..it's just a matter of how. I would say the same thing regardless of what line he worked for. It's a fact of life that these ships are a microcosm of life so there will be, without fail, some bad apples. Whether this cast member is guilty of a crime or just poor decision making is up to DCL to determine.

Actually any/all organizations/company with thousands of employees/members will have bad apples. In my opinion this seems a very resonable to say it would happen on DCL or any cruise line!

It's not a matter of someone *not wanting to beleive*........I beleive people should be permited to have the opinion that this would not happen on a DCL vessel without it being mocked as *don't want to beleive*......there opinion is deserving of respect.

I very rude way to word that postjustmestace.

Of course the way you worded your post..simply to say your opinion, that this could have happen on a DCL vessel is the only right one and anyone who disagrees is a fool and only wants of *beleive* it could not happen on a DCL vessel*.

very rude of you, in my opinion.

It wasn't rude. It was a factual observation.
Past history on the DIS shows how badly any other cruise line would have gotten slammed if this happened on another line. There would be no doubt, just convictions.

IN YOUR OPINION!

I totally disagree......DCL gets beat up qiute often on the Diz...... In my opinion, sometimes with justification and sometimes not. The other lines as well take thier hits. If you read the other cruise sites you would find other line fans go after DCL big time.

All lines have their fans and detractors. Some of the other sites are real fighting pits.

I agree with YOUR OPINION! :thumbsup2
Say anything slightly negative and you get called out by the apologists. I am a huge fan but DCL is not perfect.
Some on here can't stand it when reality starts to peek through the pixie dust and facts get in the way of how they think things should be.

This is a good reminder for me to put a password on my phone and use the cabin safe! Funny news story. :thumbsup2

I don't think it matters if he stole the phone, found it, in which case he should have turned it in or someone sold it to him, the fact that it was working should have given him the hint that someone, somewhere was paying for his usage!

Whichever way............it ends up as stolen!

It’s been proven time and again that many consumers end up investing a large amount of self-esteem into the brands they “love”.
In this case it's Dis and Apple, so it’s a double whammy.
When the brand stumbles or is called out they feel like it is an attack on them. And all too quickly they attack and vilify the messenger bearer or in fact anyone who has the nerve to assault the brand.
It shows just how unbelievably well branding works. For some consumers they are almost unable to separate their persona from a brand or group of brands and they believe any fault or attack is an attack directly on them and on their beliefs.
I like the whole Dis thing, it is great fun but I don’t invest myself in the brand, well at least I hope I don’t.

It's not working as a phone. As long as a smartphone has a charge you can use apps, the camera and wifi without any kind of plan.
