Going to be in Florida this winter with a stop at Disney and trying to understand Florida toll roads. For the cashless toll booths can you use a credit card or do they only accept transponders? Thanks for any guidance.

If you are going to use the toll roads frequently, stop at a Florida welcome center and buy a SunPass transponder from a vending machine. Additional funds can be added through their website. Cashless means there are no manned toll booths. Florida uses Bill by Plate if you do not have a transponder. Just don't go through a Sunpass lane if a cash lane is available, I believe there is a fine if you do. As an alternative f you live in a state like North Carolina or Georgia, the NC Quick Pass and Georgia Peach Pass can be used. Not sure about northern toll systems or Texas. Can other members who use the various toll roads clarify if I am correct for other roads besides the Florida Turnpike?

My understanding is that - now - e-Pass and SunPass are accepted on all roads in Florida that either are accepted (and therefore Peach Pass is offered on all those roads as well). My understanding is that the only difference between e-Pass and SunPass is that e-Pass offers discounts and SunPass doesn't.

Sunpass does offer a discount over bill by plate though. I go down to Florida 2 or 3 times a year and take my transponder with me. Here in NC, you can't move their transponder between cars so at the time it made more sense to use Florida's. NC now gives out the toll stickers for free but you still can't put them in a rental car. With Florida's transponder, I just log in, add the tag number, and set the date range. I have even forgotten to do that for a few hours of driving and it appears that you can set the time retroactively on the same day and the tolls are picked up and not sent to the rental company for their full charge and per day usage billing.

Cashless means unmanned. In Florida, the unmanned ones are usually the exits of the Turnpike, 429, 528. Those you can either go the transponder side, or they do have coins. I used to carry a jar of coins in my truck when I lived in Orlando, as we only had 1 transponder, and I always forgot to put it in my truck when I went to work.

I can attest to a version of this type of situation also. On our recent trip, right after we picked up the car we entered the tag number on the SunPass account with the date range. In my excitement of being in Orlando, when I got to the Disney resort I realized I had forgotten to physically pull the transponder out of my bag and attach it the window. Doh - been waiting for a ticket from Alamo. But, I just checked my Sunpass account today and it picked up that first day. Love it.
