Cashier didn't scan item WWYD?

Last week we were at the grocery store (me and kids) I had finished checking out when I realized there were three or four things in the seat with DS, so as I was packing the groceries, I sent DD back to the front of the line with the items and the money. The cashier went on and on about how honest I was and thanking me for paying for the items. As we walked out to the car, DD was saying she didn't get what that lady was talking about--why was she telling us thank you for buying the items we wanted anyway???

However, if I had already gotten home and it was not me who left the item off, then I don't know that at this time of the year I would go back. It's pretty crazy out there and when I am done shopping the last thing I want to do is go out again to fix someone else's mistake!

I would keep it and wish myself a merry chrsitmas, happy birthday or whatever but no way am I going to make a trip back there for their mistake. If they give me to much change when I am paying I normally tell thim if I catch the mistake.

I have had this happen twice (both at Kohl's strangely enough). The first time I went back, the lady was so shocked and gave me the item at a great discount for being so nice an honest. The second time, they told me thank you, but wouldn't let me pay for it. Both times they were shocked and kept asking "are you sure we forgot?", but I would have felt bad if I didn't go back and pay for it.

I'd call them. They may tell you not to even bother, or they may be able to scan one from the store and take your info over the phone.

I'd probably at least call. I'd feel guilty too.

Truthfully? I'd think "Wow, bonus!" and then not give it another thought.

I would either return the item or pay for it the next time you're in there. Don't make a special trip.

This happened to me today - kinda - I had an armoire delivered, started checking it out and found a box inside. It was a "Country French" shelf - the guys (the 2 owners who delivered it, very small store) were still here and I caught them in my driveway still - gave it to them - they almost told me to keep it, except it wouldn't go with anything in my house.

As a mom, I am very aware of my actions and my children being aware of them. I try to always set a good example for them.

For the poster who told the cashier there were 2 pans and got a wink and a "I know" - that was blatant, I would have reported her to management. Stealing. I know it was only 1.50 but what else did she let slide... you are a stranger, wonder how many of her friends shop there. Accidents are one thing but that wasn't an accident! Excuse the rant, but we are owners of a small retail establishment and would want to know!

I work in Customer Service at a large dept. store and it does happen. The store mgr is really good with customers and usually gives them a $10-$25 gift card for them being honest enough to bring it back and to compensate them for time & gas to do so.

When we moved into our house 1 1/2 yrs ago, we were at Home Depot about 5 times within a week. On one visit, we bought a gas grill, water cooler with refrig underneath, paint supplies, etc. I didn't even pay attention to the receipt, just signed my name and out we went. Got home, we live about 15 miles on way, to realize we were not charged for the $100 water cooler. I called the store and talked to customer service. The lady thought I was crazy for calling but I told her I would pay for it the next time I was in the store. I returned about 2 weeks later and the cashier didn't know what to do. Had to call the manager who also thought I was crazy. I paid for it against my husbands advice but I felt better about it. For me, what goes around, comes around.

I'd personally take it back, if I noticed it. (At my convinence - I wouldn't go to TRU this Saturday, for example!)

We bought a bunch of stuff at Lowe's when we moved, included a sheet of plexiglass for a window to put in our AC unit. Turns out, it didn't fit, so we went back to return it and get another one. I was so embarrassed when we tried to return it and lo and behold - it wasn't on the receipt! Luckily the girl just thought we were morons and took it back (without giving us anything for it, obviously.) I then doubly-checked the receipt for the new one!

I had this happen at a store once, I can't even remember which one it was. I think it was a grocery store actaully. It was a huge ordeal though. I went back in to the store on my next visit, picked up one of whatever the item was and when I was at the cashier I told her to scan it so I could pay for it, but I wasn't going to take it because they had indavertently not scanned one the day before and thus I had a "free" one at home. She thought I was nuts. She had to call a manager, who told us that we couldn't do it that way - whatever I was paying for had to leave the store with me. It was very bizarre. No matter what route I tried, there was no way for me to pay for the item without now having 2 of them.

I wouldn't bring it back unless I was already going back to the store for something else. I'm not going to drop everything in my life to fix a mistake they made, and I'm especially not going to stand in line to do it. I also won't go back to the store and complain if they overcharge me and I missed it while in the store, though. Who has time for that BS? I think it all evens out over time. I realize I'm only responsible for my own actions but I choose to act by not wasting my time to make good on other people's stupidity.

Truthfully, once it's out of the store, it's your's. I'm not sure, but if it's expensive, I would go back and pay for it. But if it was something like less than $10 I might just forget it.
