Cash vs Points

We just bought an add on thru The Timeshare Store and the points had to be used before August or we would lose them. Because we had not closed yet and the points were not in the system, MS let me reserve the nights on cash and then let me switch to points when we closed. Question.......can you always do that or is there a catch somewhere? It seems then that you could reserve some nights on cash at a resort that you only had a 7 mo window at and then switch to points when the points become available at 7 mo. Does that make sense?

In this case, MS is able to allow the switch because there is still availability and we are within the 60 day "breakage" period. (Breakage period means that there are point based rooms unreserved by members at 60 days.)

Ordinarily, reservations at DVC resorts can come from either members inventory (points) or cash inventory(from unsold developer inventory or points used by members for non-DVC reservations.) If you had tried to do this further in advance, it's unlikely you would have been successful.

Welcome Home!

There is no guarantee that cash nights can be converted to point nights. They come from two separate inventories. If there is no point inventory available when you call to change your reservation, you won't be able to use points.

Does the conversion guarantee actually appear on your reservation confirmation? If not, you might want to call MS again to confirm that a notation has been placed on your reservation record to this effect.

MS personnel do a great job, but once in awhile you get a new CM who isn't quite up on all the rules and regulations.
