Cash toll booths from MCO to Disney

Have found some old posts on this using the search box but nothing recent. Just want to confirm that you can still pay the tolls on the 528 from MCO over to Disney with cash as long as you hang to the right lanes? We paid for the Sun Pass from the rental car company for our entire trip last year and I remember thinking at the time that it was a complete ripoff. Just looking for a bit of reassurance for when the "friendly" agent behind the counter starts pointing out the $15 a toll surcharge they'll impose if I don't buy the thing in advance and then go through one of the toll points that doesn't have a cash booth.

22 days to go!

The only assurance of not getting nailed by the rental company is to get a receipt when paying cash. This means using the manual lanes that may have longer waiting lines. At some of the toll plazas you need to go down what looks like an exit ramp to pay cash. It is easy to miss the existence of the toll plaza and blithely sail under the Sunpass sensor arch and then have to answer to the rental agency for the toll if you have neither the rental company's Sunpass option nor your own Sunpass transponder.

On 417 (Greene's Way) some of the exit ramps have exact change only (or Sunpass) tolls. If you don't get a green light the next best thing to do is to send in the toll right away (not after you get back home) using the address posted in the toll booth or obtainable on the internet. If you use the Rte. 536/535 exit to Disney there is no exit toll.

I took my stash of quarters in December and used the automatic coin pay lanes on 417. We had declined the Sunpass from Alamo so I don't think there would have been any way for the rental company to 'nail' us.

See to me I have NO idea how people miss the tolls. There are so many signs and arrows before each one. If someone sails past all those signs without noticing them, I'm not sure I want them driving lol.

If you go through the Sunpass lane without a transponder, you will see a flash in your rear view mirror as the machine automatically takes a picture of your licence plate. Then you will be billed through your rental car company from PlatePass for the toll (+ the applicable service charge which is usually $15). This usually shows up on your credit card a week or 2 later. So yes, the rental car company can "nail you" for the missed toll.

Here are the various options for using automated tolls in a rental car:

I generally rent from National (I have an employer-negotiated rate that is very competitive, and can be used for leisure trips.) I use their tollpass system; since it's only two days' usage of toll roads, it's an extra $8 or so above the posted cash rates for the entire trip. Skipping the manual payment lines is a small little splurge for me on vacation.
