Cash Register Line PSA

That happens to me all the time.. One side has a bazilion people, while the other side has no one..i get in the side with no one, and when the CM finishes the prder in the long line, he turns to me and takes my order, and people in the other line look at me with the evil eye lol

When there are two lines for cash registers, use both of them!

And don't complain loudly to others in your party when I walk up to the empty second line and "bud" in front of you...because I will chuckle quietly to myself and shake my head. Especially when others see what I'm doing and follow.

It isn't my problem you don't understand how the lines work at Disney.

My PSA for the day...it happened multiple times on our trip. You'd think people would learn eventually.

Saw this at bag check all the time. I totally walked past all the lined up people. Although the first time I didn't, and someone totally walked up to the empty side and I had a D'oh moment.

Similarly, when they say "fill in all available space," fill in all the available space -- or don't gripe when someone else fills it in for you and gets ahead of you as a result.

The CMs even loudly announce to form two lines!
(A related PSA: if both gates are open for Pirates of the Carribean, and people are only going through on one side (usually the left), take the right!! But please don't laugh at the people waiting on the other side while you walk on .)

I believe it is the opposite. There are rumors that all the left lines are actually shorter because Walt was left handed. However, even if that is not true, 90% of people are right handed and will naturally go right. I was just on PotC this weekend, took the left, and could see the person that was across from me just coming into sight when I was on the boat.

One of the best pieces of advice I got when we went on our first trip:
USE BOTH SIDES OF THE REGISTER.
I kid you not every time I went to a CS location I walked on an empty side while up to 5+ people were in line. Nobody said anything but "I didn't know you could do." Then preceded to follow my lead. THANKS DIS!
The only funny part was it was always the right side that didn't have people on it.

There was one very annoying CM this last trip. The right line was huge and the left line had one person. I'm guessing the CM got scolded by a guest, or something. She would take the orders for 3 people on the right and then turn to the left. It took forever.

I don't think there is anywhere at WDW where there is one line feeding into two registers.

It actually happens like this at a lot of merchandise locations, not really in food&beverage, though. For example, in the Emporium :] You get in the one queue, at which there are (usually) three to five registers open. Ever hear, "Next Guest in line!"?

Agreed, but I think the OP is talking about the typical counter-service restaurant setup; people line up on both sides of the register, and the cashier helps each side in turn. Often people get into the (long) line that's obvious, and the other side is empty.

Yep. The first few times I went to a counter service restaurant, I ended up standing in the long line because I just didn't know that we were supposed to form two lines. I never noticed any sign that said to do so, so I figured that there was only one line. Now I know better and get on the side where there is nobody standing so that I'll be next.

Yes, going to the left usually works best because most people go to the right, but sometimes you see lots of poeple going left and nobody going right (like the last time we rode TOT in October, everyone was going left at the split and a line was building up that way, so we went straight ahead instead). Sometimes you just gotta watch and go the opposite of how everyone else is going

Yes, in the emporium and also where you buy the pictures from your photopass, one line feeds into about 4-6 registers

So they hover between the two registers. I see this all the time at fast food restaurants and some retail stores. It drives me nuts. I went to an open line one time and nearly got my head shot off by dirty looks! I wanted to scream at people to pick a line!

It may work at Disney, but it doesn't necessarily work elsewhere.

At a fair, I was in the middle of a long line for food and drink, when I noticed there was no one in another line. So I went up to that line, only to find it was a drink only line (was not marked well).

So I went back to my place in the original line. And the guy behind me angrily stated "no butts." I went out of line, so I had to go to the back of the line again. I tried to explain, but he wouldn't hear of it.

I went without lunch.

Yeah, been there, done it. I shouldn't condone it, but I understand. I have lousy luck at picking out the faster line. When you get in line at the grocery store, you cannot tell if the person in front of you is writing a check (takes a while to verify idenity), buying cigarettes (the cashier has to get the cigarettes from another side of the store...that to stop underaged smoking) or buying something that will ring up wrong (which will require a lengthy price check). And fast food restuarants are just as bad. While the next person in the line next to you might be ordering coffee, the next person in your line might be ordering Big Mac Extra Value Meals for the entire Brazilian tour group.

As I told the person behind me when the cashier had to do a price check for a 55 cent can of beans (which rang up at 59 cents), "They should put a sign on my back that states 'You're in the wrong line, sucker.' "

Oh, I don't know. When we were there a few weeks ago, that left side line was really long. The CM standing there just pointed to the right, so I went right. I got a ton of dirty looks, but I walked directly onto a boat...while the left side had lines waiting to get on boats. People tend to be lemmings...they see those in front of them go in one direction and they follow along.
And that whole move all the way in, filling all the spaces??? Almost got my head handed to me at the Laugh Floor. It seems that most guests just headed right down the middle, leaving a ton of room on the left side..as usual. So, our group moved down the wall to fill in the space as directed by the CM. Well...I had one gentleman, and I use that term somewhat loosely, turn to me, glare at me and say the line forms at the back!!! I politely explained that the CMs had just announce that we were to fill in all the empty spots. His snappy comeback??? "yeah, whatever. line still forms at the back.''
And bag check??? Got a ton of dirty looks as I walked up to the security guy, bypassing the long line on the other side. It seems that families tend to clump together and figure they will all get through faster if they are on the same side. Nope, doesn't work that way.

We walked into Casey's Corner in Oct. Everyone was in line on the left. Only one in line on right. DH asked CM which line and he pointed to short one. Got mean looks from those in left/long line, but they stayed put and watched us get our food while still waiting!

Honestly, I don't think there is a way to stave off the "budders" comments.

Same with the Fastpasses...people think you're somehow getting one over on them when you use them.

No, but if you would have done 10 mins of research into a trip that is probably costing you thousands of dollars, you can enjoy the same "perks" other guests are.

I usually walk up and first tell the guests in the long line that they can use both lines. I give them a chance to redistribute then get in line myself. If they just look at me and don't move as they often do then they can't really get mad when I get served first.

It *fascinates* me how many people don't do simple research before a trip. Would you buy a car right off the lot without test-driving it? Most wouldn't because you normally don't invest about $10,000 into something without doing some kind of research... Why wouldn't you want to do some kind of research before your vacation, which can easily cost several thousand dollars...? I don't get why people wouldn't want to try maximizing time on their vacation. I had resort guests look at me like I was nuts when I mentioned EMHs to them... They had NO idea what I was talking about. I guess I kind of get people thinking there is a charge for fastpass, but people don't even want to ask, they just sit there and complain... (Guess it's that American mentality to blame everyone but yourself...? )
Being a CM, I get how excited guests can get. I've been there too. I understand you all aren't "all there" because you're so excited. I'm not talking about that. I could tell people w/ questions who had done some type of research before the trip versus who didn't. I'm not expecting everyone to sit on these boards or to go out and buy the big thick guidebooks, but even being *slightly* informed makes all the difference, ya know??

And to the OP - thanks for posting this, brought back some memories of me doing the same and having guests complain... I can't be blamed when you don't listen to the CMs telling you both sides are open, or that you don't notice the sign saying to use both sides of the register and I'm certainly not going to purposefully wait longer for no reason. My free-time is valuable, whether or not I get into the parks for free.

Thanks for listening to the CMs about moving all the way down. I don't get on the loud-speaker at Stitch and ask everyone to do it because I like the sound of my voice, haha. I know it gets kinda congested and crowded when we bunch you up together like that, but there really is a method to our madness!!

Same goes for the gate entry/security bag-check lines. I walked up at MK and walked to the empty side of the table at security. The guy across from me said "uh, there's a line here" in a very nasty manner. I smiled brightly and said "yep, on both sides." He shut up quickly as he looked around and noticed both sides of the table being used everywhere else...
