Has anyone used these in the past? If so, are they worth it? Are they widely accepted? Are the charges a lot?

Any advice would be great! :thumbsup2

Do you mean the pre-paid currency cards that you load up with euros or dollers and use just like a debit/credit card? If so, then yes we've used them for a few years now.

Used the Co-op's Cash Passport Euro card in France the year before last, a Fairfx Dollar card in Florida last year and then a Fairfx Euro card in France this year.

Had no problems with them at all. They were accepted everywhere that accepted Visa/Mastercard so was just like using a credit/debit card.

The only downside in using the Fairfx one (can't remember if it was the same with the Cash Passpot one) is that the only way to check your balance was online, which is a pain if you haven't got a internet connection.

As for charges, there wasn't any charge for actually using it in shops etc, but there was a charge if you used it to take cash out of a machine (just a couple of euros/dollars) so tried not to use it too often for cash.

The other thing you need to check to avoid charges is the inactivity fee. With the Cash Passport they charge you if you don't use it for so many months. We just cancelled the card at the end of the holiday, but with Fairfx they don't charge if you don't use the card so we have kept our Fairfx cards and will use them again for other holidays.

Hi Suzy,

Cheers for that, we concerned that they were a bit like the "pre-paid credit cards" that you can get (conned in) over here

Think we're going to give it a try at DLP this year and if it works ok give it a crack in Florida next year!!!

All exciting! :cool1::banana::cool1::banana::cool1::banana::cool1:

Hi Matt,

I've just had a quick look at the t&c for Cash Passports and they do seem to have a lot of "fees"...they even charge you for loading up your card! :scared1:

With our Fairfx cards the only fees we have paid have been the 1-2 euro/dollars each time we have used a cash machine. Otherwise there have been no fees at all and the exchange rate they offer is usually one of the best around. Might be worth checking out all the different foreign currency cards (think the Post Office do one now?) and getting the one that works best for you.

If you decide on a Fairfx card then there is no need to pay the fee they charge to set it up as there is usually an offer around somewhere on the net or just ask someone who already has a Fairfx card to refer you and you get the card free.
