Cash in china

For those of you that have been on and china, did you get Chinese currency before leaving home or did you wait til you got there? If so, did you find it easy to get at ATM's?

Also, how much cash did you end up needing? We're you able to easily exchange back what you didn't need?

I honestly can't remember how much we took - maybe $500 in Chinese and $300 in Hong Kong dollars? No matter, we definitely needed more but each hotel we stayed in either had an ATM in the hotel or one nearby. We went to quite a few places to shop that required cash only - a lot of street markets.

We just got money from ATMs - there was one right by the hotel in Beijing.
Our spending was minimal - we shopped quite a bit but prices were low.
I am not sure if you can change money back - I think we used most of ours as the tip for the Chinese guide.

I have traveled to China twice (2 adoptions). I never got Chinese currency before leaving. Every hotel I have stayed in changed out currency as a service for the hotel guests.

I was in China in 1991 and at that time, changed money in the hotel. The rate was comparable to going to a bank and I felt it was safer at the time. In those days. the exchange was to FEC, but at many vendors would provide change in Renminbi yuan. Foreigners were not supposed to have any yuan, but ended up with it anyway!

We took about usd $100 of each - just so that we would have something when we arrived. Apart from that we used ATM machines, they're everywhere
