Cash for Clunker...Really?

Let's see what affect this has on auto sales in the months after the program ends. Sales will fall through the floor.

Doggone it, I was gonna say that, but you beat me to it.

That is the main question in my head. Are we merely coercing the folks who were going to buy anyway into buying sooner? If this is true, then the floor will definitely fall out.

I read today that this free money is having the 'unseen' effect of causing a shortage of fuel efficient cars. Everyone knows what happens when there is a shortage, the dealer charges a premium price! (thereby negating any savings from the $4500). I see many dealer lawsuits coming from this, especially if they say they cannot charge their 'premium' under the plan rules.

Also, we blew through $1 billion in 4 days. Now that they have the $2 billion extension approved, they say it will last until Labor Day. Am I the only one thinking it will be gone in two weeks, a full month before the program ends?

Then what?

While I am not knocking any of my buds here, I read an interesting analogy yeaterday. Someone takes $4500 from me, gives it to my neighbor, then interviews my neighbor. When my neighbor says he enjoys the $4500, they say 'We have achieved success!'

Why don't I see logic in this?

My brother....the new Nostradamus! But...I have a feeling he's right.

Let's see how many repos happen. popcorn::
Another budding Nostradamus!! However, the people losing their houses at least had jobs when they got their mortgages. Most new car dealers don't offer the "We tote the note" financing.

Yeah, but I doubt that the auto financers are relaxing their underwriting standards for this - but you never know.

I was just talking to the owner of Lakeland's largest auto dealer last week. The dealership is adjacent to our church & they rent parking spaces from us for their employees. He said that he's instructed his sales people to pull a credit report before they even talk deal. If the prospective buyer says they have outside financing, he wants proof stating how much they are pre-approved for - even on the C4C sales. He doesn't want his people wasting valuable time on people who couldn't qualify on a loan for a free lunch. Those are a lot of the people coming in to try and do the C4C deal. It seems most people driving real clunkers are doing so for a reason. Apparently there is no scramble to try and work deadbeats thru the system. FMCC, who will be financing our new truck, questioned my DH's job churning of the last two years. And we already have on loan with them in good standing on our Zephyr. Of course, I have worked hard all my life to maintain stellar credit.

Deb, to get the emblem off, heat it up with your hair dryer, and then take some dental floss and work it back and forth behind the emblem to cut the adhesive... :D it works.

I scrapped that idea. I'm going to take something from the owner's manual & use.

You are cracking me up! You sound just like my husband. He has emotional attachments to his vehicles and his guns. In fact, I read your post to him and he said, "I like that lady!"

You know what's funny? In the 37 years I've traded vehicles, I've never had such an attachment. The only other vehicle I shed one or two tears over was when I traded my '87 Crysler New Yorker in on my '99 Grand Marquis. I think I was attached to the NY'er because I did the deal myself without my DH's input. It was a wonderful car that I wracked 130k miles on. The only reason I traded that was because I was driving 120 miles round trip to go to work each day and was getting concerned about being stranded on the interstate. I had the original "bag phone" cell service back then & it was out of range more than in. The cell networks were very limited at best in 1999.

I'll post pictures later today or tomorrow of the new baby. I'm going to have to come up with a name for her - or maybe him. We'll see.

OH NO!!! My pragmatist husband who thought I was being silly with my sentimentality just washed "Old Red"!! He says that he's not taking a dirty truck into a dealership. It wasn't dirty as it got poured on during one of our nightly thunderstorms. HA! I knew deep down inside that the fact the truck was going to be killed was killing him. I gotta laugh!

The day before we traded, the dealer said we had to have the past two year's registration with us to prove length of ownership. If you've owned the vehicle less than 2 years - no deal. The engine of the "clunker" is killed before being taken to a junk yard. The junk yard salvages anything usable before the skeleton is destroyed. The service department where we traded said our truck was in such good condition, that just about everything would be removed for replacement parts & just the engine, A/C & frame would be destroyed. So, in a way, "Old Red" will live on! When you view it from a "trickle-down" effect, this isn't so bad after all.

Also, if you can't afford to buy a new vehicle (which a lot of people driving clunkers can't) that sort of limits the playing field to those who have somewhat decent jobs & credit scores.

I'm another one that took advantage and traded my old SUV for a new 2009 Dodge Caliber (I did make sure to buy American). Since the SUV has long been paid for I was able to take advantage of the voucher, matching cash and another dealer credit to get it at about 50% off MSRP and pay in cash. While I could have made the SUV go a few more years, I was able to go from 14 mpg (what the SUV actually got) to about 24 mpg. I've estimated I'll save about $800 year in gas.

You forgot to account for the Tax increase you will get to pay for this program. Actual net savings....ZERO.:scared1: Then deduct the cash you had to pay out to own it free and clear...you are techinically in the hole for a while now. But you do have a new car which is good, I guess.

you might want to see this before you consider trading in your clunker...

Now that is scary!!! While I'm sure their defense would be "We have no intention of using any data unrelated to CARS.", we must keep in mind who we are talking about here.

Do they EVER keep any program strictly within the boundaries in which it was created? "Never had, never will."

I think I will stay away from the CARS site.

I'm waiting for Big O an his peeps to come out with "Cash for Vacation".:thumbsup2

Thats how I wanna jump start our economy.

Last Caliber I saw was made in Mexico, which I guess is technically still made in America.

It takes a lot of stuff with it too - likes arms, legs and other miscellaneous appendages.
