Casey's Is Ruined For Me!

Gee, last time I checked regular hot dog and hamburger buns were made out of regular flour, NOT wheat flour

Wheat is wheat. If you are allergic to wheat then you cannot eat a white bun made from wheat flour. It is still wheat - just processed more than whole wheat flour. You would need a bun made from some other flour, which was not the standard offering before this change.

What do you think the "regular" flour is made out of?

It's made out of wheat also which is what Stinky_Pete was getting to.

It's very confusing how these things are marketed. They make a big deal out of "wheat bread" and "wheat flour," but the truth is that regular flour is made out of wheat, too.

I'll admit to being a white bread addict and know that whole wheat tastes different than white flour/bread... however,

they are made of wheat,

White bread is made is from wheat flour from which the bran and germ have been removed. This is where much of the nutritional bread value is. White bread is lower in zinc, fiber, thiamin, niacin, trace elements and "good" fats and oils. White bread in many countries has to be fortified with vitamins and minerals *by law* during the bread making process. These are usually sprayed into the mix. It's somewhat ironic that the nutrients that are removed from wheat are re-added by this means. Nature provides, we destroy, then add it back in via a man made form.

Once the bran and germ is removed, the flour is bleached using potassium bromate, benzoyl peroxide or chlorine dioxide gas. Potassium bromate is also known as Bromic Acid or Potassium Salt. It's an oxidizing agent, can be fatal if swallowed, is harmful if inhaled or absorbed through the skin and may also cause kidney damage. Benzoyl peroxide is another irritant that can kill animals, birds, or fish, and cause death or low growth rate in plants. Chlorine Dioxide is also a pesticide and even though it breaks down very quickly, it is ranked in the USA as one of the compounds most hazardous to the environment.

and some breads that are "brown in color" may not be made from whole wheat... (some nice coloring solves that, and again, those are the o nes that taste better to me!)

That's not quite accurate. My DS6 had a mild wheat allergy (outgrown now :) ). He could eat Wonder bread type white breads, because the protein from the whole wheat that caused his allergic reactions is not present in very processed wheat products. There was no need for him to eat gluten-free bread products A friend's DS12 has a mild wheat allergy. He's fine with saltines and white breads, but gets a rash from real whole wheat products. He could eat Casey's old buns, but probably would have a problem with the new ones. If you've ever tried one of those gluten-free breads, you'll find it's not something most people would eat by choice. A kid like my friend's shouldn't have to have his hot dog on something completely unfamiliar like the gluten-free buns just because Disney is allegedly concerned about it's guests eating habits. If you add in the new warnings for people with nut and seed allergies, a lot of people are adversely effected by this change for little or no benefit to the overall well-being of the average Disney guest.

You are NOT kidding!!!! We had the "gluten free" bun in Epcot.:scared1: It was the weridest texture. It was just gross. The manager said it was a tapioca bun? I don't know, it was gross.

Just talked with a friend - who had a casey's dog - and went back FOUR times because of the bun... (hey, she knew a Casey's bun was NOT supposed to break!) She was so upset she stopped at Guest Relations to file her complaint -

they said that they had indeed changed vendors, and have received "numerous" complaints...

Lets hope that means action -sooner than later- -

keep those emails going to voice our stand!! Bring back the soft buns!!

:)

Well, maybe a little bit of a different opinion, but I love "wheat" bread and multi-grain bread, even for my hot dogs and hamburgers. But, I also realize that everyone does not and I agree that there should be a choice.

That being said, I do not think it is Disney's responsibility to only produce foods that have absolutely no chance of triggering one of about a million allergies someone could possibly have. If you have a particular allergy, I think it is your responsibility to say something about it before biting into that bun and do you own research.

My two cents.

I guess i must be completely oblivious to these changes:rotfl2: ...i have been to disney world 4 times in the past yr and i havent noticed anything different about caseys hot dogs.....\people have always told me that im oblivious half the time....i guess this proves it....hmm.i guess i'll actually have to pay attention to the hot dogs when i go back in august...lol

I agree with you that people need to research what they are eating. However, given that fact that nut allergies are on the rise in children, Disney switching to ingredients that could cause reactions in those with nut allergies is questionable. Especially when the foods we are talking about are the most "kid friendly" (i.e., hot dogs, hamburgers, pizza). In my opinion this is a stupid move.

Unfortunately, you will never please everyone regardless of what you do.

Actually we only buy the whole wheat at home - I think the problem with this vendor is these buns are

Buns of STEEL
:rotfl2:

Like I posted, my friend has an AP and goes several times a year, and Casey's is her "must do" and when she kept getting "hard, stale, buns" she just couldnt figure it out - so she went to Guest Relations to find out - and its the vendor, and they are getting lots of complaints!

because, even whole wheat buns shouldnt break in two pieces!

OK the hamburger buns for CS have been changed to the new buns but what about TS that serve burgers like Sci-Fi? Have they been changed as well? Does anyone REALLY know why Disney made this change? Maybe its to make people not eat CS and eat TS instead so they make more money? :confused3 If Disney doesnt make a change by August, I guess I will just be eating A LOT of chicken tenders for lunch or maybe I will just eat Ice Cream or stop by whatever park Im in to their bakery and get something from there. Also any word about any changes at the French bakery in Epcot for their subs or Earl of Sandwhich in DTD? Do they still have the same rolls or did they switch to?

So here is yet another tradition ruined! We just got back from an amazing trip except for a few little things. Casey's was one of our sentimental traditions as soon as we arrive in the Magic Kingdom. Not anymore! We got our hotdog and opened the wrapper to find a dry roll that was actually in two pieces! The rolls they use now are absolutely disgusting! In addition, we ate a pizza in Blizzard Beach and the crust was also digusting. Why would I want to eat a pizza with brown dough which actually had caraway seeds in it! How ridiculous and unnecessary! The hamburgers, hotdogs and pizza are ruined! What is the point of all of this anyway! Of course, my opinion, but I a heard a lot of other complaints from people regarding the same think while we were there. Why cant they just leave well enough alone!

The problem is their new initiative to make the food healthier. I agree though, for us it was the burgers at Pecos Bill and Starlight Rays'. In the past we would visit these two places multiple times during a vacation. This time around, we went to Starlight's once. That boiled/low fat burger was just incredibly dissapointing.

The problem is people complaining to them about HAVING healthy choices. From Disney's point of view, "the customer is never happy" is probably what it sounds like to them. But regardless, I encourage everyone to do what I did and WRITE IN!!! Tell them you are very unhappy with the state of the food!! They won't change unless people complain!

Not to highjack the thread, but the bun issue brings to mind another "Disney knows no happy medium" issue.

On our first Disney trip in '99 I had a horrible time finding chicken nuggets/strips. I couldn't believe that I had to criss-cross parks to find them.

Then, in 2005 they were everywhere. Life was good.

Now, no strips, just lumps/nuggets. And, if you want the adults to be able to enjoy a sit-down meal you will have to search far and wide for the few restaurants that serve chicken strips. Seems they've all switched to grilled...and replaced fries with pasta or fruit...in an attempt to save the world.

Why can't Disney hit the right notes where food is concerned? Concerning the bun issue, why not have the whole wheat version be standard, but have white buns available on request. Bread is perishable...and even if they buy huge amounts and freeze it, it seems like this would be something fairly easy to deal with as far as adjusting purchasing based on demand. Subway seems to be able to deal with offering multiple breads...surely Disney could master this, too.

I dunno. Someone needs to provide Disney with directions to the middle ground, 'cause they seem to have problems trying to find it on their own!

Sounds to me like the problem isn't the fact that the buns are wheat (or whole grain) but that they are poor quality! If I was to order a hot dog or a hamburger and the bun were to fall apart I would definitely return it. Even at Disney I return bad food (or maybe I should say especially at Disney) If guests keep complaining (and returning food) then hopefully Disney will listen. :listen: I'm not a big whole wheat fan but I know there is a huge difference in whole wheat products. Islands Restaurant has a very good wheat bun that I acutally order instead of the white one. And it's nice and soft too! There are good, healthier buns out there, Disney just needs to make another (vendor) change.

As to having nuts, etc. in my pizza crust-NO NO NO-I will not eat it, I will not eat it in a boat, I will not eat it with a goat.... If all the pizzas at WDW are now made with a crust that has something hard and crunchy added to it I guess it's no pizza for me at WDW. :confused3 I don't have them that often, but we usually have some a few times per trip.

I was just there less than 3 weeks ago. My kids ate at Pizza Planet 2X & Pizzafaria 2X. (Dh & I only once each) There were no nuts in the crust of the pizza. It was very good.

My kids raved about it & that's why they wanted to go back a 2nd time. Did someone say there were nuts in the crust?

Earlier in the thread it's been reported that there wre caraway seeds, etc. in the crust. I'm happy to hear your kids loved it.

I won't eat at the places where they have made these uncalled for changes :snooty:

Then you'll have to eat off property because the changes are everywhere at WDW. There are a few places with specialty sandwiches or special flat bread style pizzas that were unchanged but you have to really search for those. Even the pastas were being changed to whole wheat or multi grain.
