Carryon size

It’s been a few years since we’ve flown. I just noticed our carry-on suitcases are 22 inches long not including the wheels. With wheels it’s 24 inches. We never had a problem before. Will we have a problem with them now?

Which airline? Southwest allows 24" high, most other domestic airlines are 22". I've never had an airline actually measure using those size boxes when boarding. They usually spot check and reject something that's WAY larger than the limit. On full flights the gate attendant will ask anyone who wishes can gate check their carry on free of charge. I often see those with over sized bags using that service to avoid the possibility of being rejected and paying a fee. But again, I've never seen an airline reject bags that are close to the proper size.

I have seen agents not only put suitcases in the sizing boxes, but also pull out a measuring tape, so don’t count on an oversized carry on bag getting on the plane.

They have not changed so if you used them before you shouldn't have any problems now.

Does JetBlue offer gate checking? If so, I would not worry about it at all.

Yes. They have changed. Airlines have gotten much stricter. You may find that your oversized bag is no longer a carryon

I'm sure it varies some by airport. Strictest place I ever flew out of was Ontario, CA. They were aggressively checking carryon size before you even got in the TSA line.

Jet Blue states the size is 22 x 14 x 9 including wheels. Trying to take a bag bigger than that on the plane is taking a chance. If you decide to bring a bag that big I would make sure you have nothing in it you need with you, or that is expensive, in case they make you check it at the gate.

Keep in mind that now that most airlines charge to check bags, overhead space in the airlines is at a premium. Usually there is not enough space for everyone that wants to stow a bag up there.

If they are too large to be a carry on they can and sometimes do make you check it. Not gate check but check. I have witnessed that too.

Bottom line is going with a bag you know is too big is taking a chance.

I agree and practices vary by airline. Be sure to check the website of the airline you are flying to get the latest info. People have been trying to avoid paying the checked baggage fee by carrying on bags they would have normally checked, that is partly what created this problem. There isn't enough overhead storage to hold everyone's luggage. On some airlines, there is an added fee if you have to check your bag at the gate.

We fly JetBlue frequently and I've noticed over the last year they've gotten stricter about carry-on size. I've been stopped a couple of times when initially going through security and have had to put my bag in the box to make sure it fits (it does). I've seen others turned back to check their bags because they don't fit. Other times no one has even looked at the bags. Certain airports have also been tagging bags as carry-on & personal. If you want to be sure, get a bag that sticks to their quoted dimensions. I've never paid to gate check a bag on JetBlue.

I've been a very frequent flyer for the past six years, mostly on United, and my home airport is Newark. Have I seen gate agents and airport security use the luggage sizer to check for oversized bags? Yes. Is it particularly common? Nope, not in my experience, at least. If you know your bag comfortably fits in airplane overhead bins, I wouldn't hesitate to bring it. Chances are, you'll be fine. But be prepared for the possibility of the other outcome.

A few years back we had to get a new carry on because the sizes had changed and the carry on we'd used for years was now too big. Always make sure and look up the carry on size for the airline you are flying to make sure, or the one you fly most often.

I fly a lot also, the only airlines I've seen checking diligently are the cheapo's like Spirit and frontier. I guess those airlines are getting lots of business from the folks who claim the strictness has increased.
