Has anyone ever had a problem with an airline refusing a carry on that had wheels, within the carry on size limits?

No problem. In fact most everyone has one with wheels nowadays. Just remember that the measurements include wheels or any other things that stick out. On most jets mine fits into the bins wheels first no problem. On the regional jets it has to go in sideways, so it's first come first served.:)

Thanks Dis Guy - I am still using my old over the shoulder bag, it can get heavy carrying it around an airport. Saw a really nice wheeled one.

I'd suggest taking along the allowable size info and a measuring tape when you go shopping. Remember that you can fill most soft-sided bags to the point of being way too big, so careful packing is needed. Mind you, I've seen "carry-ons" the size of my checked bag.

Just remember that on commuter flights with smaller airlines (Jazz, Porter) people with larger carryons will be asked to sky check at the ramp. Just because it meets the size restriction doesn't necessarily mean it will actually fit and fly in the cabin. They do have the right to right to require you to do this. It is more likely to happen to those wheeling down the to the gate.
