Carry On Luggae

One of the things that makes me crazy is someone taking a piece of luggage that is way to big and trying to make it a carry-on. Has anyone noticed a crack down on carry on sizes? I did see one gate person making a woman rearrange her things so she would only have two items.
I was planning on taking a new duffel bag as my carry-on and after I measured it was one inch to wide for Allegiant Air but when I flew Air Tran earlier in the year it was just the right size. It really doesn't help that all the airlines have different measurements. I'm changing my luggage plans.

I haven't seen a lot of it. When we flew last month, there were a lot of bags that looked like they weren't the correct size and nothing was said.
I actually wish that the airlines would start charging for carryon bags. Not a lot, but perhaps $15 for use of the overhead bins. Then, give each passenger one free checked bag. Second checked bag goes for $35. You should be able to make do with a personal item (going under the seat) and one checked bag.

It drives me nuts to see the passengers struggling to get those pieces of luggage into the bins. They clog up the aisles, they make everyone behind them wait when getting off the plane, they drop the bags on others..it's turning into a nightmare.

I did see a lot of multiple bags on my last trip. The gate agents at DTW were telling people they could only have two bags, so people were trying to fit bags into bags at the gate. They had to move to one side to do it. Then on the plane we were all told both ways that we had to put our purses into our personal bag under the seat. Some of the bags that went into the bins were over sized, or garment bags, or large shopping bags.

I have a small eBags rolling duffel (21") and a backpack that I used with great success, but there were a lot of people at MCO struggling with their carry ons while boarding, and there were quite a few folks who had to rearrange things that blocked the aisle-ways.

So while I did see some problems, it was mainly on the MCO side of the trip, and I think that happened because they boarded funny (and 10 minutes early) at MCO. They had the back rows go outside and downstairs to board, and the rest of us boarded through the front, so people were scrambling to make last minute adjustments to their carry ons.

As long as airlines continue to charge so much for checked bags, this is going to continue to be a problem.
