DH and I are taking a quicky trip next week, we are only taking carry on luggage which means we have to do the 3-1-1 rule with our stuff. My small hairspray bottle is 4 oz.....so I know I can only have 3 oz. Can I put my hairspray into a 3 oz or less bottle and bring an empty 4 oz bottle with my sprayer on it empty to pour it into later???? I really can't go without my hairspray :scared1:

The prohibition is against liquids and gels, not against empty containers that did or will contain liquids and gels.

In other words, yes, you may do that. I would suggest you reuse an old container for shampoo or something instead of a "generic" bottle. TSA screeners have been known to reject unmarked bottles, but will not examine marked bottles to determine if the actually contain what's on the label.

Have you checked the travel size products at Target? I know there are a couple of different hairspray choices there for 99 cents. If you aren't too picky on brand it may be easier to go this route.

I carry an empty Britta filter bottle with me every time I travel. I have never had a problem with it in my carry on luggage.

Like others have said you might have a problem putting your hair spray into another unlabeled container.

The last time we flew and didn't check luggage I couldn't find travel hair spray at Target, but I did find some next door at Sally's Beauty Supply. I think they had three different brands. HTH

That's because it was empty. We carry empty water bottles on with us all the time. You can take larger bottles emptied, that's not a problem. Also, my Mom travelled and she had to toss an almost empty bottle of shampoo. Apparently it was a 4oz. bottle, more than half empty [obviously less than 3oz inside it] (figured she'd "kill" it on her trip and not have to bring it home) and they made her throw it away. They said they have to go by what is written on the bottle, not what looks like is in it. She was ticked, but "I told her so".... :rolleyes1 That's what she gets for not listening to me.

Our new Bed, Bath & Beyond has a huge section of travel-size items and once you're on their mailing list, they'll send you lots of 20% off coupons. Our store will accept them even after they're expired. I just hand them a stack and they scan 1 for each item I'm buying. :woohoo:
