Day 2 -January 22, 2005 SATURDAY
Cast of crazy characters:
Carrie-Me 32 Disney filled years behind me slightly planning obsessed but usually throw all predetermined plans out the window once we get there.
Mike- DH 32 Never got to go anywhere when he was a kid because he had 5 brothers and sisters. Tolerates Disney to a point but every trip says This is the last trip for a long time! (Whatever!) Laughs at all my planning but then thanks me when we get there and realizes I know EVERYTHING!
Bradley-DS 8 STITCH FREAK and loves Disney as much as Mom. This is his third trip to WDW! A total roller coaster fanatic!
Brendan-DS 6 Mickey Mouse obsessed, deaf and autistic. First trip to WDW but he has been to DL a few times. Prone to candy tantrums otherwise known as Cantrums
Ok, sorry it has taken me so long to do the next part as we have been sick with the stomach flu and other assorted ailments!
Today we get up and decide that we are going to head to The Studios because Brad is finally tall enough for Rock and Roller Coaster. This is against our tradition. We usually go to AK and do Donalds Breakfastasaurus but since we were not sure what park we would want to do first, I did not schedule that priority seating. We also decided not to do a wake up call because we knew the kids would be up bright and early and of course they are! We get ready and head down to the POFQ bus stop, carefully avoiding the food court area, because we know Brendan will want to go in there! We stroll past that area and take a back path we found a couple of years ago over to the bus stop. As we sit down I notice there is the most interesting family sitting next to us. I am one of those people that is just completely fascinated by genetics. This family has a mom and a daughter that look IDENTICAL (very pretty by the way) and a father and a son that look IDENTICAL! It is so interesting to look at their features and mannerisms. Of course the entire time I am trying to play it cool so they dont realize I am staring at them!! Oh there is the second MK bus that has cruised by us. Where the heck is the bus for the studios? Here comes another bus ..nope it is Epcot. Here comes another bus .nope it is AK. Mike looks at me. Wanna just go to Animal Kingdom? I nod. Yep I am sick of waiting! So we run over and hop on the AK bus.
We sit down next to a very friendly couple who are on their way to AK to get the bus to the cruise line. As we are chatting the poor guy spills his coffee all over the seat in between us. He is a respitory therapist and gives me a bit of advise concerning Brendan's cough. He says to have Brendan take a deep breath and hold it for 10 second intervals a few times, and to do it a few times a day. He said this opens the lungs up and makes a cough go away days earlier. Hmm. My first interaction with a stranger and having to explain how Brendan in deaf and autistic and how there is no way I could explain to him to do that. This then launches us into a conversation about deaf children. Very nice people, I wish all people were this friendly! I hope they have a great cruise!!
We say our goodbyes and disembark (is Disney the only place you can actually use the term disembark without sounding silly?) heading to the entrance of AK and our first try with the biometric scanners. I carefully give Mike the instructions on how to put his fingers in there like he is giving the peace sign and then slide his fingers together. He says he gets it so we head on through the turnstiles. Worked perfectly, no issues whatsoever! I really dont understand why people have trouble with these!
First order of business is to get our Guest Assistance Card for Brendan. We only plan on using the card if a line is over 20 minutes long (Brendan's breaking point!) or there is no fast passes. We go into guest relations and ask the nice guy behind the counter for the pass. He gives it to us and explains how to use it. We get this pass at Disneyland a couple of times a year, so we know how it works. We then head out to enjoy Animal Kingdom. This lasts about 15 minutes.
We take our time heading to our first stop Dinoland. I decide I am going to take Brendan on Triceratops Spin (he LOVES all spinning rides) and Mike and Bradley decide to head over to Dinosaur. Now it is important that you know that Dinosaur is the one and only ride I will not go on. Every year I get talked into going on it and every year I say I am never going on it again. It is just too darn loud and scary for me! Seriously it makes me feel like I am going to wet my pants! I love the Indiana Jones ride at DL (same concept) but Dinosaur is just simply my most hated ride at any amusement park Disney or not. Of course this means that Bradley loves it and has to ride. We part ways and Brendan and I get in the very short line for Triceratops Spin. After waiting for the current ride to end, we board our little turquoise dinosaur and get buckled up. Out of the corner of my eye I see Bradley over by the exit. I look at him and ask him what he is doing as I am wondering about why they are not on Dinosaur. I look behind me and I see Mike with this angry look on his face. He holds up his hand and makes like he is dropping something while he mouths the words I dropped the camcorder. Oh CRAP! I then mouth back the camcorder? And he nods. Now I know that something like this can set my husband off into a total downward spiral that will consume him from the inside out and ultimately ruin his entire vacation. I have two options. I can either freak out and cry (this was a brand new $400 mini DV camcorder that we had never even used) or I could shrug it off and tell him we will try to get it fixed when we get home and if we cant then oh well. Although I feel like option 1 is about to take over no matter what, while riding on the ride I breathe deep and decide only by going with option 2 can we save this trip. I only have one thing to say. Thank God I am not the one who dropped it. In any case as Brendan and I got off the ride we made our way over to Mike who looked so mad I thought I saw smoke coming out of his ears. He tells me that it is totally "broken" (not the exact word he used!) and that he cant even get the tape out. I shrug it off as planned and say we will get it fixed when we get home, and of course he is so mad at himself because he really wanted to get lots of footage of the kids on this trip. I tell him that he needs to look on the bright side and at least now he wont have to spend the entire trip behind the camera. He just looks at me and rolls his eyes. The whole rest of the trip anytime we see something cool I get treated to the mock camera made out of his hands while he makes a humming noise like he is taping. I even got a few zoom in and zoom outs. Looking back it was kind of funny. Not the breaking of the camera but the fun he made out of himself afterwards! Besides there are so few things I have to hold against him Hee hee!! I am sure I will have years to use this!
We have bunch of pictures we took that day and two of them our Mikes favorites. And this is what he says:
Before Dropping the camcorder
After dropping the camcorder
Apparently in between those two shots was when he tripped and the thing flew out of his hands and crashed to the ground. What kind of cheap camcorder cant survive a measly drop from 6 feet up (Mike is 64) What a hunk of junk!? Of course I am kidding. To hear Mike tell it, it didnt just drop to the ground, it sort of flew through the air in slow motion while it made this whooshing sound as it cut through the atmosphere. LOL!
Anywhoo after I sufficiently played it off like it was no big deal we decide to have lunch at the closest place that has chicken nuggets-Restaurantasaurus. They open in 15 minutes so we go and hang out while we wait which gives Mike enough time to properly berate himself over and over again. After lunch (Mike and I have cheeseburgers and the boys have nugget Happy Meals) we decide to make a clean break of it and head over to the Studios. Mike says he needs a fresh start in another park.
So off we go onto another bus and this time it is standing room only. So we take our spots right behind the yellow line and hunker down for the ride to our destination.
The week before we left Bradley had a drug awareness assembly at school. They talked all about how to just say no and peer pressure as well as some of the different kinds of drugs they might be offered. Isnt it sad that they now have to give these talks in the middle of suburbia at the ripe old age of 8? Anyway, Bradley didnt say much about it at the time, but he used this exact moment to very loudly ask, Can you drink marijuana? Yep- he said it just like that. Matter of factly, out of nowhere just very simply while standing in the middle of the Disney bus, while no one else was talking Can you drink marijuana? Mike and I look at each other dumbfounded. We then just look at him. Luckily this was about the time that the bus pulled up to the stop and we got off as fast as our little feet could carry us! I think I must have blacked out again (maybe I should see a doctor about this?) because the next thing I remember is standing next to the giant Mickey bush to the right of the studios entrance and Mike explaining to Bradley that when he says things like that out of context it makes it sound like we are pot heads! Like he knows all about marijuana because we use it! Anyway, for the rest of the trip (out of the ear shot of any children of course) whenever Mike or I would do something stupid (this happened a lot of the course of the week) we would whisper to each other We must be drinking too much marijuana.
Heading into the Studios we decide to get a stroller fro Brendan. Mike goes and does that while Bradley and decide to go look at pins. He has some pins that used to be mine from a few years back and we ordered him some Stitch ones off ebay before coming and he needed a lanyard. We buy him just a regular blue one (he ises $5 fo the $17 he saved up and brought) with the hopes of finding just a Stitch medallion for the end of it because the only Stitch lanyard they had was one that said 2004 all over it. We take our purchase and go back to meet up with Mike and Brendan. We head over to TOT (Hummm Zoom it Zoom out) and RnRC (Hummm Zoom in Zoom out). TOTs wait says 40 minutes so we decide to come back and do that during the week when it would be less crowded. We head over to RNR and the wait time says 20 minutes. I wait with Brendan since he: 1. Is not tall enough and 2. I wont put him on anything that goes upside down anyway. I love RnRC but I can go on it later in the week. Mike and Bradley hop in line and after waiting for about 10 minutes I hear them make an announcement that the wait time will be longer than originally anticipated due to unexpected groups recording in the studio today. I walk Brendan is happy just sitting there in his stroller so no biggie. It takes the boys about 35 minutes to do the whole thing. We then go on Star Tours (no wait at all). We stop in the Tatooine Traders gift shop at the end of the ride where Brendan wants some rock candy with wooden Mickey heads on the sticks ($3.50) and Bradley finds an R2-D2 action figure (last one there & $14 - we buy this for him) he has to have because you just cant find those around town anymore. After making our purchases we head out and walk around the New York street area for awhile. Since we had decided we would relax more on this trip and not rush from ride to ride, we enjoy just walking around the park and checking out all the little nooks and crannies. We see Buzz and Woody but Bradley does not want to get his picture taken with them. Only with Stitch. We decide to head over to Epcot by boat. We start to head out of the park and Brendan has his first major meltdown. Over the course of the week the Studios would be the only place he did this, each and every time we left. I still dont know why. He fell to the ground and we had to carry him kicking outside of the park while of course people were staring at us like he was some kind of brat. Whatever, I am used to it. We go over to a planter with a bench and sit down until he regroups. We hop on the boat to the Boardwalk area and get off there hoping to grab lunch at our favorite Chili dog stand over there. Brendan LOVES the boat and keeps sticking his head out the window to look at the water. This began his week long love of staring at the water of any lagoon or lake for 10-20 minutes at a time. Good thing we decided to relax this trip!!
We get off at The Boardwalk (Hummmm Zoom in zoom out) at look for our hot dog stand. Where is it? AHHHHHHHH IT IS GONE!!! Mike and I give a little salute to the demise of our favorite place to get onion rings and Mike decides to do the next best thing. Brendan and I head for a bench so he can stare and the water some more, and Brad and Mike head into the Boardwalk Bakery.
About 10 minutes later Mike comes out with a huge white bag filled with goodies. I got a cheesecake brownie (my man knows what I like YUM!), Bradley got this HUGE piece of chocolate cake, Mike got a huge éclair and Brendan got this big chocolatey cookie. We all had milk and Bradley had chocolate milk UGH (I would have never bought that for him but Dad is a bit of a pushover). After gorging ourselves silly on sweets and finding a new fave on The Boardwalk we head into World Showcase. We get Brendan another stroller and make a beeline for Test Track. The line is 45 minutes so we use the GAC and use the fast pass line. Brendan loves this ride! On the way out Mike buys Bradley a Stitch antennae ball in the TT gift shop. We head back to walk around Word Showcase one time before heading back (geeze this relaxing day is sure getting long!) and we stop at Yakitori house in Japan (Hummm Zoom in, Zoom out) because now Mike is a little hungry. He gets an adult meal and we get Brad and Brendan kid's meals. Brendan wont eat it so I snack on his teriyaki chicken We finish walking around WS head out the front of Epcot and grab a bus back to POFQ.
When we get back to POFQ Brendan wants to go to the Food Court- he just loves all of the giant things hanging from the ceiling. It is now after 8pm so we get chicken fingers for the boys and Mike and I share a Cheese steak Sandwich which was pretty tasty (but we are not from Philly so it probably was gross and we just didnt know any better!). We were not too hungry for some reason ( I wonder why?? Baked goods and Yakitori house maybe?). After eating we all head back to the room and Mike and Bradley decide to head down to the pool and go swimming and then hit the hot tub. I stay in the room with Brendan who enjoys watching the story time on channel 14. He watches the Monsters Inc story and the Toy Story one and The Little Mermaid in Spanish (I mute it because he cant hear anyway) before he falls asleep. I add up the receipts for the day. We had some unexpected financial trouble right before leaving so we have to be more careful about spending on this trip than originally planned-we have $1000 to spend in 8 days including travel days and we have never left for under that. We need $40 of it to get the car out of the airport lot when we get back so really it is $960. Now this $960 (in bank account for room charging) does not include the rental car since that was done on the credit card so it is paid for. We also have $150 cash. This is purely for spending on food and strollers etc. We will see how it goes! I will show you how we did it just in case any of you are budget conscience. If not just skip ahead!
