So I went on CoP with my fiance and I for the first time in probably 15 years. Has the song always been the one they sing now? I could have sworn it was something like "Now is the time. Now is the best time. Now is the best time of your life." Perhaps I am making that up entirely, or maybe its from something else, but I'm hoping someone can settle the score here:thumbsup2

There have been two songs..here's some info from wikipedia...

"The Best Time of Your Life" is a song written by Richard M. Sherman and Robert B. Sherman in 1974 as a replacement song for the General Electric pavillion's "There's A Great Big Beautiful Tomorrow" (a song which they also wrote). At different times, both songs were featured in The Carousel of Progress at Disneyland and Walt Disney World. "There's A Great Big Beautiful Tomorrow" was later reintroduced to the revamped pavilion in 1993, retiring "The Best Time of Your Life."

Many long-time CoP fans remember that when the attraction first opened at the then brand-new Walt Disney World Magic Kingdom in Florida, the featured song was "Now Is the Time."

But now, the song is "There's a Great Big Beautiful Tomorrow."

But many may not know the reason for the change.

Both of the songs used in CoP are by the Sherman Brothers (Richard and Robert) who wrote lots of the great Disney songs in the 60's (It's a Small World, Mary Poppins... just SO many!)

When Walt Disney himself commissioned the music for CoP he wanted to accentuate the story that "progress" means that even though "today seems great, tomorrow is going to be better." The Shermans responded with "There's a Great Big Beautiful Tomorrow" (the song that you currently hear in the CoP at WDW.)
Walt LOVED it, it was a huge hit at the 1964 World's Fair in NYC and my family and I got to see/hear it at Disneyland after it was finally set-up there after the fair.
WE loved it and rode that carousel over and over.
When CoP was moved to WDW, the Shermans were asked to write a new song (the CoP was sponsored by GE) that stated that "NOW is the Best Time" ostensibly because it meant to "go ahead and buy appliances TODAY," don't wait until "tomorrow" (or you'll never do it.)
As a kid who had grown up with the ORIGINAL SONG, I was a bit disappointed with the NEW one.
So, years later, when I discovered that the CoP had re-opened with the ORIGINAL song back IN, I was SO HAPPY! (I couldn't believe that the present-day Imagineers had taken the time to nearly RESTORE the new CoP to its earlier Walt Disney-supervised glory!)
I can understand that it those of you who were FIRST-initiated to the CoP with the SECOND song, would have nostalgia for THAT one... but Walt himself chose the FIRST one (that's there now) and I LOVE IT!
BTW, the present voice of the host (and the "father" on-stage) is Jean Shepherd, author and narrator for the perennial
favorite "A Christmas Story" (you'll shoot your eye out!)

The original actor Walt chose for this part was Rex Allen, Sr. who also quite ably narrated most of Disney's "animal films" in the 60's, and who was also a prominent "Cowboy Film Star" in the 50's.
Rex Sr.'s voice is currently that of the Grandfather in the final Christmas vignette of the present CoP. (When I first heard that voice I nearly broke down... what a beautiful tribute to the original show!)

A third voice that's prominently featured is "Uncle Orville" ("No privacy atoll around this place!")
He is voiced by the great Mel Blanc, Sr. (Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, Yosemite Sam, Marvin the Martian... all the WB classic voices AND Barney Rubble!)
Mel is also the voice of the Parrot in another of the CoP scene.
These Mel Blanc tracks were actually lifted FROM the original audio used in the first CoP and, again, is an elegant nod to Walt's creation.

Alas, all three of these wonderful "voices" have passed on... but we can still enjoy their inimitable craft-work in the CoP.

Long may it continue to spin us into the future!

Now is the time.

Chorus:

Now is the time.
Now is the best time.
Now is the best time of your life.

Life is a prize.
Live every minute.
Open your eyes,
And watch how you win it.

Yesterday's memories
are shining and new.
Tomorrow is still but a dream.

Right here and now,
you've got it made.
The world's forward marching,
and you're in the parade.

Now is the time.
Now is the best time.
Be it a time of
joy or strife.

There's so much to cheer for.
Be glad you're here for,
It's the best time of your life.

The ride has both songs.:thumbsup2

What a great history Robo! :thumbsup2

I grew up with the "Now is the Time" version, and I admit I was a little confused when they replaced it with "that song from Horizons."

(For those who don't know, Horizons was the "sequel" to Carousel of Progress and, for many years, the only attraction that played "There's a Great Big Beautiful Tomorrow." Horizons, of course, just played a snippet of someone singing the song along with several instrumental variations.)

It made sense after I found out the reason for the switch, but I still miss the the other song.

It certainly never occurred to me that Mel Blanc voiced Uncle Orville, but now that I think about it that is definitely Mel Blanc! I also never realized that the voice of the grandfather is the original father.

Just for the sake of accuracy here there are a couple of errors in the lyrics. I feel almost sheepish to be correcting Robo, because quite frankly, he is a wealth of Disney information. So, no disrespect intended.

Thanks as always Robo for setting the record straight!:thumbsup2

The day I get through posting here without making an error (or 10)
will be a miracle!

But in this case of the lyrics, I simply quoted another website.

I'm altering my files to now quote YOUR lyrics on this song, Goof.

Wow robo - i adore and respect (can one respect a WDW attraction!?!?) COP so much and was actually moved to well up a bit at the passion in your post.

i now know i am not alone when i get a little "full of heart" in COP.

I think that CoP means a lot to many of us. The first time I saw it was in WDW during the "now is the time" era. It was the first real vacation trip I had taken with my wife and daughters (6 & 8 yrs. old) and it was, literally, the best time of my life. We sat through the show and managed to memorize the song and sang it all the way back on our long drive to Vermont.

It has wonderful memories for me and always will. Even the new (old) version with "GBBT" has meaning because I saw that one during a really tough time in my life. I had a job and a boss that was taking joy in making me feel the size of a flea, mentally, my wife decided she didn't want to be married any more and I felt that everything was going down the tubes. I haven't ever been that depressed either before or after. Being able to think that there indeed was a Great Big Beautiful Tomorrow" helped me put things in perspective.

In spite of the fact that I am not a particularly sappy or emotional guy that attraction has been a crucial thing in my life on more than one occasion. Long live CoP!
