Carnival vs DCL... I would not cruise CCL again!

I went on a disney cruise last Sept. Loved it. But it was pricey. To save money and get my cruise fix, we recently went on a 4 day Carnival cruise out of NOLA. Two sea days and Cozumel. We LOVED Cozumel.

I am not going to give a full review at all, just point out what we disliked about Carnival vs Disney. But first let me say what I liked:

The ship (triumph) was actually very nice, not run down and dirty like I kind of expected. Except, our hallway did smell like sewage frequently, and other times, they had huge fans running in the hallways with way overpowering air freshener (which I thought was worse than the subtle sewage smell because I couldn't breathe!)

The food was very good. Better than DCL, even. And I am gluten free. I felt like Carnival did a better job handling the food sensitivity than Disney.

The comedy shows were excellent, and a highlight for our family. We went to the earlier, kid friendly versions of each act and loved them. We did not go to any big shows, but did attend a towel folding seminar, and it was very well done.

Negatives: very, very crowded ship. We literally never swam in the main pool. The indoor pool was usually empty but if you wanted to be in the sun, forget it. Every lounger was taken or claimed, the outdoor hottubs and outdoor pool were people soup and there was always some stupid, loud game going on at the pool. When we went to pull out of Cozumel, I took the kids up on deck to watch, and we couldn't even elbow our way to a spot on the railing to see. Crowds everywhere. Waiting on line at the buffet or Guys or Blue Iguana, the lines were long and slow, and crowds trying to move in the opposite direction had nowhere to go. I thought the layout was poorly done in these areas.

Everything was geared toward drinking. Everything. Even at breakfast, the waiters were sooo excited to tell us the bar was open and expected us to order shots. And were dismayed when we declined. Alcohol everywhere. Also, the kids had to walk through the very smokey casino in order to get to the arcade.

Our stateroom host asked us as soon as we arrived, if we wanted the standard twice a day room cleaning, or if once a day was okay, and would morning or evening be better? He explained that their work load had been increased from x amount of rooms to y amount of rooms (I can't remember the numbers, but how is this our problem?). Seems to me I am expected to tip the same regardless. Since we felt put on the spot, we agreed to once a day in the morning but found this very off-putting. (we did not change our tip amount).

Getting on the ship was very unpleasant and took forever. Once we were onboard, we had to wait in the buffet line for an hour. After waiting two hours to board after our 11:30 boarding time (which we arrived right on time for).

Now keep in mind, I am comparing DCL concierge to CCL non concierge. Of course one is going to have better service, but the basics like crowd control, room cleaning service, pool area, type of crowd (heavy drinkers and partiers vs families) were in stark contrast.

Overall, my impression is we will never sail Carnival again. I'm looking at trying NCL next because we really want to try ports that DCL does not offer, such as Belize and Roatan.

I know there are other posts comparing the two lines, but does anyone have thoughts on my experience, or recommendations for a cruise line that fits our family?

Let's see you booked a 4 day cruise over a holiday time so that meant more kids, more crowds. The 3-4 day cruise are called booze cruises for a reason (this is on any mainstream line). We only sail on 7 day or longer cruises in summer so we get lots of family groups and I don't really notice any crowding. Of course after several cruises we have learned to time meals and pool use to avoid the masses.

The check in time you chose was just that, for checking in. Carnival does not offer a guaranteed boarding time.

The once a day room cleaning is what they are going towards now. You don't have to feel guilty choosing both (it is true though that Carnival has lessened the number of stewards so they do have more rooms, no excuse for them to make you feel guilty though).

I don't drink and have never felt pressured to purchase alcohol.

I think you will find all of the same issues on every line if you choose the same time of year and length of cruise.

We sailed Dec 15-19 so it was not holiday time, same as our 4 day Disney Cruise. Nowhere was it advertised as a "booze cruise". In fact, carnival is heavily marketed toward families and kids, so I should not have expected this, in my opinion. Also, I did not notice an abundance of kids, just crowds. Mostly drunk adults. We couldn't take a 7 day cruise due to work.

School aged KIDS were not out yet, but COLLEGE students were out for their month long holiday break.

Ahhh, that makes so much sense! My husband joked that we had "Ft Lauderdale Spring Break" at the table next to us on the beach at Cozumel. They were from our ship, and so so drunk as soon as they got there. Drinks were flying (literally- my son got hit by one) and there was screaming, drug talk, pick ups, and just unbelievable drunken debauchery all day long.

I think any cruise line iis going to have more partying then Disney. I like them all for different reasons. I have kids, but I"m an adult and adult type fun doesn't bother me. I stopped being entertained by Mickey Mouse by age 7. I love Disney, but I can't imagine doing it over and over again. Variety makes life interesting. I would try a longer cruise on one of Carnivals newer ships. Vista and Breeze are great. You'll see more kids because they offer more for kids. Try some of the newer ships on rccl and NCL. I've never had a room host ask us if we wanted once or twice a day. We always gotten twice a day.

I did a couple of 4 day Carnival cruises spring break when I was in college. It was a total party cruise. I loved it then, had a blast, but at age 40 no thanks.

It really doesn't sound like your negatives were that bad to be honest...whatever I've sailed Carnival 7 times I've never personally had a problem. I did notice on my last cruise that the clientele was more on the drinking side...and I prefer Royal Caribbean's look, feel, and service better...I have done almost all cruise lines and prefer Royal to yes even Disney.

What is with this? This is a very common comment from people's Carnival experience from many trip reports I've read. Smelling sewage is unacceptable in any aspect of life much less vacation. And it's not just the sewage complaint, but smells in general with Carnival, whether it be excessive smoke or mildew or other unpleasant odors. I would think that would drive people away faster that anything, so it would seem Carnival needs to get this under control fast because a lot of reviews are stating this.

The Disney Magic has had the same problem. I've read it on these boards and I have experienced first hand. This isn't uncommon with older ships. The triumph doesn't have the best history "poop cruise" is the one I remember. We didn't have this on Carnivals newer ships nor Disney's newer ships.

Pretty common knowledge that 4 day Carnival Cruises are party cruises. Crowds are everywhere. We did the Disney Magic last month and it was literally standing room only in the pools. Forget the activities in the teeny atrium - you couldn't move. And we did have mildew in our bathroom. So good and bad on any line. BTW, a newer CCL ship like the Vista would probably have been a better option. Since you've sworn off CCL though you're probably better off with RCI or NCL - but the newer, bigger ships. I would not go with the smaller/older ships. Make sure to do a lot of research before you decide.

I've experienced the sewage smells, backed up plumbing, fans, etc. on the Magic & Wonder. I've even had these experiences in a suite on the Magic. It happens even with Disney ships. Just a quick FYI.

They're not going to advertise it as a booze cruise. They're referred to as booze cruises in the industry and to a lot of regular cruisers. 4-day cruises tend to be occupied by people who are trying to get as much vacationing as they can into a very short period of time. To many, vacationing is all about drinking until they forget how miserable they will be when they get back home.

I agree with others. I think longer cruises have a different demographics. Our Fantasy spring break cruise was in SJ the same time as a week-long Carnival cruise. I saw lots of families getting off the Carnival cruise. DCL 3/4 days are not booze cruises, I think, b/c it's assumed it's a kids cruise and the high price to cruise on DCL. I have heard drinking/inappropriate behavior of other cruiselines' 3 day cruises. And now, with unlimited drink packages, there's the incentive to "get your money's worth" on the cruise, as well.
Note-the one issue we had with drinking was a Mom next door to us on DCL with her friend. They came in at 1am, super loud and not nice when I finally knocked on their door and asked if they could be a little quieter as I had sleeping kids (at 1am). So, go figure.

Definitely try a longer cruise before you write-off the line entirely. I have to think Concierge DCL cost 5X-10X more than the 4 nt. CCL out of NOLA. Lines with lots of ships will put the older, less-efficient ships on the short routes, and local ports. A 7-nt on one of the newest ships would have much more experienced staff, and higher expectations all around, but at a higher price point as well.

Word of advice to anyone who ever books a Carnival cruise, for $50 per cabin you can book Faster To The Fun (fttf). It gets everyone in your cabin priority boarding, tendering, and debarkation. Before sailing on a new line, I always scour the Cruise Critic message boards for details like this, heads up about potential issues, and alternate dining venues which have shorter lines ;). That is how I knew to reserve character meets and adult dining in advance of our first DCL cruise. Research and planning make most vacations more enjoyable!

Out of the main lines you have Carnival known as the party boats no matter the length. Royal Caribbean is the something for everyone line. Celebrity is the pseudo-luxury older crowd, Holland America is the old-age classical cruising and Disney is family and kids.

Actually Disney is the known as the "spoiled kids screaming everywhere cruise line where pixie dust is crammed down your gullet and everyone has to act sudo-happy all the time".
