Carnival Liberty engine room fire

I guess the inspection is taking longer than expected as there has been no announcement yet.

@truck1 , presumably the CO2 would be liquified to maximize storage? If CO2 were being pumped aboard, you would see ice on the pipes and some vapor? And two trucks worth? Thats a hell of a lot of CO2!
I would think it is potable water since the mains haven't been running, no flash/reverse osmosis facilities and as the ship is operational, possibly off loading black water as well?
EDITED.

Sounds like the official word that came down on the ship is this:

Here is the update...we will return to San Juan once clearance is granted. Guests are welcome to stay on the ship in San Juan until Sunday. All guests will receive a full refund of the cruise, all pre paid shore excursions and gratuities will also be refunded. Guests will also receive 50% off a future 2 to 7 day cruise. If we do not receive clearance from the coast guard by 9:00 pm, Carnival will arrange travel from St Thomas to our homes.

Well...........seems there was more damage then originally thought, however that is not unusual in the ship fire, especially in the engine room.

That's seems pretty generous from Carnival as well......Texas, you know how I feel about Carnival, but how many times!

I know, I was thinking the same thing. Then again, they've got 23 ships, things are bound to go wrong. I think you just hear about it more on Carnival. Here is John Heald's post on FB a minute ago:

CARNIVAL LIBERTY STATEMENT

September 8, 2015 – 5pm EDT

The Carnival Liberty continues to remain in St. Thomas following an engine fire that occurred yesterday while the ship was docked there during a scheduled port of call visit. The ship’s command is presently awaiting permission from authorities to sail.

Once the vessel departs, it is scheduled to return to its homeport of San Juan. Guests will have the option of remaining on board through the rest of the week and exploring San Juan or disembarking and traveling home. If clearance to depart St. Thomas is not received by later this evening, the company will move forward with arrangements to fly all guests home from St. Thomas.

All guests are being provided with a full refund of their cruise as well as a 50 percent discount on a future cruise. This is in addition to a $150 per person credit that has already been applied to guests’ shipboard accounts.

There were no injuries to guests or crew as a result of the fire which was extinguished by the ship’s automated suppression system. All hotel services including air conditioning, elevators, toilets, galleys, etc. are fully functional and the ship's normal array of activities, entertainment, dining options and programming are being offered.

We apologize to our guests for this unexpected disruption to their vacation and the inconvenience they are experiencing.

Carnival Liberty departed San Juan on Sunday for a seven-day Caribbean cruise with 3,346 guests and 1,150 crew on board.

The bends from CO2, now that's a new one!............LOL

I was thinking the same thing. Theres either more damage then we think or the parts aren't readily available but will be in a few days. In the mean time, they can vacate the pier in St Thomas to create room. I think Carnival is doing an outstanding job of keeping people informed and minimizing the impact.

I wish I could say Im surprised by the CO2 bends comment, but Im not. I wish I knew who taught him confined space because d really like to have a few words with his instructor.

But you rarely hear of RCCL or NCL or Celebrity or others!

The important thing is no one was hurt...and I will say Carnival crews seem to step up to the plate well in a emergency!

Looking back, there have been 5 reported fires on Carnival ships over the past 20 years,
Celebration, 1995 - engine room, Ecstasy, 1998 - laundry, Splendour, 2010 - engine room, Triumph, 2013 - engine room, and now Liberty, 2015 - engine room.

In the same time period, Royal have had 5 also,
Enchantment, 1999 - engine room, Majesty, 2005 - Galley, Allure, 2012 - engine room, Grandeur, 2013 - aft mooring deck, Freedom, 2015 - smoke stack.

Not sure how reliable the source is since Disney's isn't mentioned....

Yes its typically liquefied, and you possibly might see some vapor or freezing of the lines BUT it also depends on atmospheric conditions at the time. As far as quantity, it takes a lot to fill a room effectively. If you figure the average engine room is at least 30 feet tall, by roughly 100' wide (usually the width of the ship) by about 200' long, that's a lot of cubic feet of space to fill. (roughly 600000 cubic feet )Not counting the myriad of vents and pipe chases that need to be filled also. CO2 expands are roughly 500:1 so 1 pound of CO2 becomes 500 pounds when released. It would take roughly 1200 cubic feet of compressed Co2 to fill just 1 engine room. Not counting reserve or a second engine room. Each standard 6000 psi cylinder holds roughly 500 cubic feet of gas when full or roughly 250000 pounds of CO2 when released. That's assuming 6000 psi cylinders. They make lower pressure versions. And my calculations could be off on the size of an engine room.

As far as the tank truck it could be water, but typically the ships will just hook a hose to a hydrant on the pier to refill their water bunkers if they need to, so I don't see that as a reason, but a septic truck might be another reason.

Yep, and there are a few Princess, Costa, Pullmantur, etc. listed as well. Since RCCL and CCL have approx the same number of ships, it makes some amount of sense that the number of incidents is about the same. That site failed to report that there was a fire on the DCL Magic in 2002. My issue is that so many of the CCL fires seem to be engine room fires. Then again, a fire is a fire is a fire.

My friend I am not talking fires only. but lets look..........the Splendor and Triumph came with in a air breath of going wild. Hell the Splendor didn't even have the right manuals to operate the suppression systems. the legend, Dream and Liberty, all these are major fire/accidents in up to date, modern vessels. All these happened in the last few years.

Add the Costa Millimimun fire that sent her to the scrap yard.

All left passengers adrift or needing to leave the vessels.

My understanding the Liberty has had past problems as well. Now it seems she had a severe engine fire.
Now the other issues, There are reports of the faulty design of some of their ships. the entire Destiny class having major mechanical issues, many ships had no redundancy in safety systems, many of which are slowly being added in the yards

I have read repeated reports of the Carnival vessels built for Carnival line at Fincantieri have electrical problems.

and lets not forget the Costa Concordia....33 lives lost..........all because of the playboy captain and the office staff who based on what I have read, delayed action trying to protect Carnival Inc. 5 have been given prison sentences.

And that is all I can remember on the top of my mind

Yes, RCCL, but to my knowledge those were all minor and the Grandeur was a cigarette fire , by a passenger that threw it over the stern and it blew back onto the aft deck. The enchantment was due to a light bulb burning a life preserver. the Majesty and allure were minor engine room fire and they continued on the voyages.

Disney has had 2 minor fires, 1 was a closet fire and the other on the Magic was a insulation smoky fire in the top of the aft stack. The insulation over heated and never did more the spark with minor fire and distort the thin sheet metal outer shell and then she was on her way.

Seems to me there really is no comparisons......the magnitude of the incidents on Carnival highly out weights all the others.

Sorry. I will not take the safety of my family and friends and risk it on a Carnival vessel.

WOW, quoted yourself with more negativity and couldn't get anyone to bite so you have to come back with the above post! HAHA

I think everyone on this board knows how you feel about CCL and it will in no way change my mind or many others. Have a good day! :D
