CARMAGEDDON - July 15-17

O.C. likely to survive 'Carmageddon'

But, here in Orange County, Caltrans officials say motorists should not have much to worry about.

I LOVE this! We have often said that once you check-in and if you have to claim luggage, you could drive faster. But bicycle... could be close!

Yes - could be interesting: Google Map of bike route from BUR to LGB.

Well, maybe not that interesting. I thought it said 38 minutes, but on re-reading I see it says 38 miles. That's at least an hour for the fastest cyclists with clear sailing.

Just checked into VGC, they gave us a letter saying that if you are traveling on the Disneyland Resort Express it is recommended that you depart for LAX 4 hours prior to your flight domestic and 5 hours international. Plus, sending us to Guest Services to get around the freeway closure.

Doesn't matter to us, we're here for the weekend and then head south to go home.

Carmageddon is here and...so far, so good. It's still early on the first day, but it seems that all the warnings are working. Here is a screenshot of Sigalert.com taken at 9:16am Saturday morning.

The 405 closure is easy to spot in RED. But the surrounding freeways are still moving very smoothly. Visitors arriving at LAX and heading to the Disneyland area* have green conditions the entire way. And likewise, anyone departing DL for LAX have a pretty clear drive too. And lastly, for those coming from points north of LA and heading south on the I-5 to LA or the OC, things are looking pretty good right now.

Again, it's still early in the day and more traffic is sure to come later. But the early signs are encouraging. If you have to be out on the freeways, try to check those traffic maps from time to time and good luck! :goodvibes

*Disneyland is just off-screen, in the lower right corner of this map. It would be just south of the Sigalert.com logo in the bottom right of the map.

I'm at the parks now, and crowd levels seem normal for a Saturday during the summer.

All the breathless warnings and hype from government agencies and the news media has been really successful. It is now mid-afternoon on Carmageddon Saturday and the freeways are all in excellent shape. Here is a screenshot of Sigalert.com taken at 4pm.

Again, the RED area is the 405 closure. Notice that everything else around it is pretty much in the GREEN. Traffic to LAX and back to Disneyland is still clear. And those traveling from the north like helenb have smooth sailing on the I-5 South.

Let's just hope that all of us locals don't get complacent and all get on the freeway later this afternoon or tomorrow! As word gets out that this has turned into "Car 2K", congestion can still happen later in the weekend. But for all of those currently traveling, enjoy the drive!! :goodvibes

Let's just hope that next year everyone listens to the warnings and stays home as well. I hope we don't see people say well, nothing happened last year, so why worry about it this year.

I am truly amazed that people did listen, but I am happy to see it having turned out to be easy for those that did indeed need to get places.
