The different in price at Caribbean Beach resort between a preferred room and a standard room was more than I originally thought it was. I have a 13, 10 and 4 (almost 5) year old at time of travel. Any opinions on if paying more for the preferred room is worth it?

In my opinion, no. You can request a room (knowing requests are just that) in the Jamaica village and be close to everything. My son and I stayed there and it was a 4 min. walk at best to anything. He has permanent nerve damage in his spine and I have osteopenia and neither of us had any problems.

You will get different answers. Some people think that anything over a 5 minute walk is "forever" and will definitely say preferred is the only way to go. We have not stayed there in a loooong time, but we are heading there in March and like you, we decided it was not worth the extra $35 per night for preferred, we used that $$ to pay for our CRT reservation:) Our family actually likes walking through the resorts with their great themes and foliage and are looking forward to CBR.

We have stayed in every village at CBR and feel that preferred is no way worth the premium. Unless you book a Pirate Themed room you will have less than 7 minute stroll to OPR and the Main Feature pool. And over 80% of standard rooms are under 5 minutes.

Plus every Village has its own bus stop and leisure pool so you'll never be far from one no matter what.

We have not booked preferred here and haven't felt the need. We stayed in Jamaica and then Aruba. Both times we had about a 6 minute walk over the bridge to food and main pool. We easily walked to our room from the Custom House and when we checked out to leave we walked from OPR to the Custom House. It's always a beautiful relaxing walk.

If they can get through the day in the parks walking, they should be fine at the resort. When we stayed there a few years ago the early risers would go get breakfast and bring it back to the room for everyone. That might work out for you.

I think that preferred is a good way to go if you have the budget for it and really need to be super close to the main public areas. I have occasionally booked preferred rooms and enjoyed the added convenience.
However, most of the times that I have stayed in moderate resorts I have opted for standard rooms. As others have said, there are other areas that are standard that are just as convenient. We usually request Jamaica 44 or 45 and find rooms there to be perfect for us.

We avoid the pirate themed rooms, though. Too far, double beds and scary theme for some littles.

That was me with my family in Trinidad south. I fetched thd coffee and pastries every morning. Walking a mile (round trip) in such a pleasant environment was not a bad way to start each day.

That is the only way I would ever again stay at CBR--in preferred. I took the advice of many on this board and book standard, and regretted it almost immediately. We were in Jamaica, which was great for being close to a bus stop. But it was horrible for going up front for a quick fill of the mugs, or just to look around. After a long day in the parks the last thing I wanted was a hike to the front to fill my mug, I ended up buying pop from the machine near my room. I walk around all day at work to the tune of 10,000 steps or so. I'm not slow or lazy. But the standard room was a pain in the rear. Never again at CBR!!!
