I'm organizing a care calendar for a dear friend who just lost her husband to cancer. She has two elementary aged kids and herself to feed. Our community would like to provide meals for at least a few months, hopefully more.

What are some meals you have provided for this type of situation? I'd like to give some suggestions to people who may want to sign up, but don't know what to bring them.

My go to meals for grieving families are usually lasagna, pot roast, roasted chicken... that sort of thing.

Any ideas would be welcomed. Thanks!

Stews keep well and can easily be made the day before and taken to someone's house, if needed. Don't forget the kids, too! We had a family that lost their mother, and we organized fast food gift cards and also boxed lunches for the kids to take to school.

BTW, I don't know if you already know about it, but takethemameal.com is a great way to organize meal drops.

platter of deli meats and cheese with bread, so they could make their own sandwiches; spaghetti with salad and bread; baked chicken and rice, plus a green vegetable; chili or other soup - taco or Sante Fe type soups go over well here and chicken or vegetable soup is good too. Once the weather is warmer: pasta salad; chicken salad on croissants, fruit salad, etc.

Just take them what YOU would like to eat. :goodvibes

It's great that you're doing this. So many times people bring meals for a just couple of weeks but it's such a help to the family to do it for longer. I can't imagine what all that poor widow will be dealing with. Having a meal brought over means not only that she doesn't have to buy the food and cook it, but that someone is thinking of her and her children.

I say think comfort foods! You can do mac & cheese with fried chicken, minestrone soup, baked ziti, ham, split pea soup, sandwiches, homemade bread, etc.

Find someone who knows her kids and what they will eat. Remember to give them a couple of days off to eat leftovers and some things they are wanting without having to eat what's been brought. Set guidelines about how to present the meals and what to do about dishes, etc. Everyone should masking tape their names to their stuff so she doesn't have to keep track. Someone should volunteer to help her write thank you notes.
Don't be afraid to ask her what she needs.

I had a nice group make dinners for me after a recent surgery and have made some dinners for neighbors. We use foodtidings.com. It is great!

Some meals are:

meatloaf, buttered noodles, vegetables

burritos, corn salad, salsa and chips

pizza from a local place

roasted chicken and sides

soup, bread, salad

swiss chicken bake is always good with sides

quiche, salad

chili, cornbread and salad

I also received desserts. Brownies, cookies, etc.

Some people do take out too...chinese, panera, etc.

I just checked a friends list. Some of the things made for them were: potpie, pulled pork, beef burgandy, stuffed peppers, taco bake

Thanks for all the responses, they are very helpful!

The funeral was last night. The family is just devastated, as you would expect.

What was wonderful is that every family from both kids classes came to the funeral. It was an amazing show of support for them. At least a hundred kids were there to hug and console the two children.

Now to get everyone organized, because they are ready to help.
