car trips with a dog

My biggest advice is to keep your dog in a travel crate while traveling for safety. This was shared with us in a puppy care class. Our first drive with our pet we followed this precaution & got in a huge car accident. The crate totally saved her life as the seat belts saved ours. Had it not been for the crate, she would have easily been tossed from the car. Since, we have never taken her out of the crate when in the car. She just sleeps in there so it's easy. And then of course we have her water, food, leash, clean up baggies, & treats with us at rest stops. We make sure that we never leave her alone in the car either. We take turns using the restroom & eat all meals together in the car. Stay safe & have fun! I love traveling with our pet. Feels good to have the family all together. :)

We took a 7 hour drive with our 1-year old cockapoo this summer. He's generally a very active pup, and I was nervous. We used a safety harness in the car, that we purchased at PetSmart --- get the kind that allows the dog to lie down.

I was prepped with treats and water and chew to toys. He slept the whole time - lol!

We made two stops along the way, and he enjoyed the thruway rest stops where there were lots of people and other dogs.

It went SO SMOOTHLY! I hope your trip goes as well. Good luck!

Great advice here! I'm making an appointment to have her chipped this week and then we're going to Petsmart to look for a seatbelt harness. Our Ford Focus isn't big enough for a crate.
