Car top carriers??

DH is talking about getting one for our trip to WDW next month. Does anyone else have one? My only concern is how much do they hurt gas mileage???
Anyone have one? Love it/hate it???

We've had one that we've used for about ten years. We've used it for WDW and Myrtle Beach trips from up north. Got it at K-Mart and had to assemble it myself. It's two piece, clamshell type. Holds pretty much. I have to secure it carefully and securely to the roof rack of the van. If the straps aren't really tight, it will make some noises. I am always wary of it being there, but I've never had trouble with it. Haven't ever really monitored the gas mileage because we had to used it no matter how much gas we needed. Some of the newer ones are a lot sleeker than ours. Ours really holds a lot. Usually I put the soft case stuff in it, but I have also used it to transport two golf club sets and then fill around it with beach chairs, beach towels, other stuff that fills in around it. Generally I leave it on for the whole vacation and just drive around with it empty. Shop around. I know we paid under $60 but that was a real bargain. You can spend as much as you like.

We got ours from Sears about 18 years ago. We always take it out for a test drive once it's on the van to make sure it's secure. We couldn't do Disney without it. I don't know how much it hurts your MPG and for a few days each year I really don't care.

ditto to Disneyjunky......we're on our second cartop carrier. We either go to the beach (Ocean Isle)or to Disney. Wouldn't tavel without it. We have a van with captain chairs and everyone can stretch out. Don't believe they add much to the gas costs.

They do make ones now that are more aerodynamic. Most sporting goods stores carry them.

Let me just give you a brief warning. DON'T GET A SOFT ONE! Made that mistake years ago. My family was driving down to Florida and decided to get a soft one to save room in the car. My luggage got the lucky chance to be in the carrier. Yeah, well it rained, and my luggage was a red duffle bag. Long story short, everything that was light colored was dyed red.
