Car Seats if using Magical Express

After yesterday's airplane crash into the Hudson River, I hope if anything it makes parents realize the importance of safely securing their child into their seat. The descriptions by the passengers on how severely they hit the water was truly scary. I definately would not want to be holding my child in my lap during an incident like that- I would much rather they be secure in their own seats, whether they are old enough to sit and fit properly on their own (5 and up) or strapped into their car seat in their own seat.

I know yesterday's incident was rare and luckily had a happy ending, but the risk is not worth it, to me. Others may disagree and that's cool:-)

Honestly, for a couple hundred dollars, I can't even imagine NOT getting my baby a seat, and using a carseat. I've travelled with babies, and it never even crossed my mind not to pay for a seat. I'm not worried about crashing, but turbulence is a real issue.

I was going to post the same thing! My DS is now 6, but there is no way I would've let him fly on my lap as a younger child.

Do you guys think I should use my big Britax for 2 year old DS, this will be his first flight, or do you think I can use the CARES and him still be safe and comfortable. I just want him to be happy and safe.

I agree with the ones who say lap children are NOT safe on a plane. I heard there was an infant on the plane that landed on the Hudson...does anyone have more info? That said, if you're determined not to buy a ticket for the baby, then it seems a car seat would be useless on the trip.

Here is the verbage from SWA for example:

"The FAA has banned the use on aircraft of certain types of child restraints that may be harmful to a child in the event of an aviation emergency. These include backless booster seats, safety belt extensions (commonly referred to as "belly belts"), and vest or harness devices that attach to an adult. Although some that were manufactured before the FAA's ban may carry an insignia and/or language indicating they are approved for aircraft use, please understand that they are no longer permitted.

NOTE: Devices that tie the child to another person are prohibited for taxi, takeoff, and landing regardless of any approval labels they bear.

And this is what the Baby B'Air is, so you may as well throw that sucker away.

I wouldn't take my Britax simply b/c I wouldn't want to deal w/ it and it having to be under the bus etc. I usually take our spare seats if I can, a Scenera or something similar. That's what we took for Evan last time, he was almost 3. We'll have the infant seat, an Avenue, and a RN next time w/ a booster in there somewhere (or my mom can get one for him and have it ready for him).

I just flew with my 9 month old for the first time last weekend.

He was a lap baby simply because I knew there was no way he'd sit in his car seat (not when Daddy or I were sitting right next to him and could hold him).

I will say, make sure you hold on tight during landing. When the plane hits the ground and the pilot steps on the breaks it's easy to jolt the little ones. We (DH or I) never took our hands off of him and it was fine.

If you do decide to take a carseat they make a wheely thing that attaches to most car seats to make it easier to handle and I think the kids can even sit in it like a stroller (for a short time, like through the airport). They have it at One Step Ahead, I know.

I have never used anything on a plane for kids under 2 - I figured if we crash, the car seat wont save them... sad but true. I always have checked their car seats. The issue once you arrive is cabs and other transport like the magical express. I would be inclined to bring a seat for the 9month old if Disney has latch on the express. If not then I would not bring a seat for either little one. But hold yourself to a no car travel rule if that's the case.
The buses don't have any seat belts.
The DME buses have upholstered seats, but no seat belts.
The resort buses have hard plastic seats.

I agree with the majority that a baby is safer in a car seat - it's simple physics. In case of an accident, or sudden change of direction caused by turbulence, you most likely won't be able to hold onto your child. The forces will be too great.

Good discussion. We have a 2 yr old as of today and are going in Oct. We had planned to drive, but realized flights are getting cheaper and may decide to fly. Something else to weigh into our decision.
