Sorry if this has been asked a hundred times but...
My car insurance covers rentals so I never opt for the additional insurance but on a trip to Vegas we rented for a day and the lady at the rental counter told us that our insurance would cover to repair the car if we were in an accident but we may have to pay the amount that the rental company would be losing every day that they couldn't rent it out while it was being repaired.
Needless to say we opted for the insurance that day. Is that true??
Any help would be appreciated.

Also is it cheaper for me to join The Emerald Club so I can be listed as a second driver or pay the daily fee for second driver.

(I already have my reservations with National if that makes a difference)

I'm not an expert on this but in theory they can claim damages from not being able to rent the car. At the same time your insurance should theoretically cover this under the liability section of your policy. Whether the rental company tries to charge you for this and whether your insurance carrier covers it remains to be seen.

It is also my understanding that the rental company should only be able to cover loss of use of the vehicle if they prove they could have rented the car during that time. In other words, they'd have to show every other car of that class was rented at that time thus proving they lost $$$ by not having the car available.

I have no personal experience with this, it's just my understanding.

You can join Emerald Club for free via www.turnertravel.com
It will say they are charging your card for 50.00, but that is a default announcement. They don't, they do waive the fee.
So, since it is free to join, and there is no charge for an additional driver that is your spouse (and a few other extra driver definitions), it is probably not a bad thing to join. BUT, since you have a reservation already, I don't think you can modify it to include your EC, so, you would either have to call and have it linked or make a new reservation. You will get your EC number immediately when you join.
