I have to rent a car for an upcoming college visit trip. What is your favorite car rental company? And where do you go to find the best deals? I used Dollar one time but definitely wasn't happy with them.
TIA!

I like Alamo, You can skip the counter and go straight to the car, get in, and drive off.

I use CostcoTravel.com (membership required) to get my best rates. They give me the 2nd driver free and I can cancel and rebook any number of times as the price drops without charge.

I have also found the best prices from Costco Travel. We rented an SUV for a month for our honeymoon road trip through Alamo. I was happy with them.

I check carrentalsavers.com several times a day. Initially I book a rate I can stomach then anytime I find something lower I book that then cancel the one before. Rates fluctuate literally minute by minute so keep looking to find the best you can!

I don't know I just rented a full size car from firefly for an entire week for all of $99. You can go through Costco or Alamo etc but you'll pay double and I'm not so sure it's worth it if you are on a budget

Thanks so much! Right now, I'm choking on what I'm seeing the cost is to rent a mid-size for approximately 1 1/2 days...it's almost equal to the cost of one of our airline tickets! I will check out the suggestions above. I did check out Costco, but their rates were very high compared to Priceline.

A midsize car for 1.5 days costs more than your airline tickets? It should cost like $40 tops! What are your travel dates?

I hope you know what you are getting into. I have no personal experience, but all the reviews I read says to avoid like the plague. Here are some of the things I read about.
  • Only a few miles a day allowed before they charge you by the mile.
  • Ticket counter often closed
  • rents substandard vehicles
  • Tries to claim you created the damage that was there before you rented
  • Generally a cheat
Just search for Firefly car rental reviews. Most would give zero stars if they could.

Yes! I'm traveling to Pittsburgh April 5-6 on SW. I need the car to travel to Erie and back. Right now, the quotes (with fees) are $150-200!!! I refuse to use Dollar (bad previous experience), and they are the cheapest at about $100. Since I had a bad experience with them, I'm wary of using the super-cheap places.

There are no car rental companies with positive reviews. Zero. Priceline specifies unlimited miles on all firefly rentals and firefly does have older vehicles but we are talking about a 2014 Malibu with 30,000 miles- not exactly a clunker. I made a back up reservation in case things go awry though!

If you have a SW credit card I often find discounts going through the SW shopping portal. They often beat Costco by a few dollars.

Did you try the transportation board here? They often have discount codes too.

No - great suggestion!!! I'll check it out!

I found that using the Costco # which you can find on the Transportation boards gave me a better deal than going through Costco's site. Also there are other coupons that can be applied to get the cost down further. Also Alamo has a Drive Happy deal that many on those boards like as well.
