:moped: Has anyone ever used a debit card when renting a car? I have heard that you must have a sredit card, which I do not have. Which companies will take a debit and what do I need to bring?[/FONT]

This was for a local rental here in VA, but I used a debit card with Enterprise. It was a couple of years ago, but IIRC I had to fill out an approval form for it and provide proof of employment, residence, and insurance. Paycheck stubs and household bills with addresses were used for the first two, I believe. They might have had to contact my employer by phone to varify employment, but I'm not 100% sure on this one.

I imagine the same would be for any rental company that does accept debit cards, but I also imagine each company is different whether or not they will accept debit cards.

Alamo, National, Dollar and Budget will accept debit cards. The rules are posted on the respective web sites.

Most will take a debit card with a round trip plane ticket.

They usually will put a hold on upto $300 or the cost of the rental, which ever is more. You may not be able to get that money hold released for several weeks.

Call the agency that you wish to use for their specific rules.

Alamo and National do not put any holds on your debit card. Alamo charges for the amount of the rental at the time of pickup and only the cost of the rental.
National debits your card at the end of the rental with no holds placed on the card at all.

Dollar likes to place a big hold on your account plus run you through a credit check and if they don't like your credit check they will not accept any other form of payment, they, in essence, cancel your reservation right there.

I have not used a debit card with either National or Alamo but have never had a hold placed on my CC from National so I would think that the debit card part is true. Enterprise and Budget will place a hold on your debit card also, Before I had a CC, I used a debit card to guarantee an insurance rental and Enterprise did hold $250.00 for a week, I used Budget earlier this week and there was a sign in the office about the $300.00 hold on a debit card and that it may take up to 6 weeks to release it!
