I'm starting to look at car rentals to travel through multiple states. The ones that I've looked at say that the car can only be driven into regional states and then there are additional charges going to other states. Have any of you used a company that doesn't charge additional for this? Any pointers?

Thanks!:goodvibes

I have rented from both Alamo & National in New Hampshire (@ Manchester Airport) and have drove to Florida & back several times. I have never seen restrictions in the contracts regarding staying within an area. Maybe you need to rent from am airport location as opposed to a satellite smaller office ?

Years ago we rented a car from either Budget or Dollar (can't remember which), and drove roundtrip from Michigan to Las Vegas. We didn't have any restrictions, and made sure we had unlimited mileage before we left.

But perhaps times have changed? As the previous posted suggested, perhaps look to local car rental lots as opposed to airport locations. (Although when we rented, it was from an airport location.)

Good luck!

Just in looking at the fine print several companies have offered unlimited miles but to regional states in the area that you are renting the car. I talked with a rep for Hotwire who said "nearby" and when I asked for clarification, she then said the lower 48 states. Definitely something I will verify with the company before booking! Thanks for your help!

I just went through this is June. I was driving round trip from FL to MI. I rented from Thrifty BUT when I called their 1800 # to ask about driving out of state what I was told is it depends on each rental site. Some Thrifty sites allow this and some don't. In my case I could rent from Sarasota airport but not in town. My advice is to call and ask before making reservations.

I was able to book on line, did a wild car booking (size didn't matter to me) and got a great deal with unlimmited miles for 10 days. The whole thing with taxes was less then $200.

Good luck.

We ran into to this with Budget. We rented in San Diego & could only drive the car in CA., Arizonia & Nevada.Would have been a problem if we were planning to go to Oreg. or Wash. but it didn't affect our plans. I hadn't remembered seeing anything when booking our car.
And we rented from the Budget at the San Diego Airport.:confused3
I now know to call and ask if we are going out of state.

Ha! Never knew there was a limit. We rented an SUV last summer and drove from MI to CT and back.
